Red face Help me choose an iron

OK, so last night the iron gave out on me mid way through my favourate handkerchief. As I am a 'new' man, I like to take my share of the household responsibilities; one of these being the designated ironing officer. Before you all laugh and ridicule, I actually quite like doing the ironing - usually with wireless headphones, bottle of beer and HD movie at point blank range.

Anyway - I need a new iron, and need advice. Where better than an AV enthusiast forum.

Is it worth getting the all singing and dancing steam generating like this, or am I better off with a mid range branded device for £40

I enjoy a nicely ironed shirt, and want to achieve the best possible result. Do these steam generating ones really make that much difference?

Any advice is welcomed.

Steam generating iron all the way, you really do get what you pay for in these cases.

Yep.... ditto.

Less filling up at the tap and you use the steam to iron your clothes, not the heat of the baseplate - so less chance of damaging the material. Ours has conked out so I'm reduced to using a normal iron. Seems to take twice as long and the results are nowhere near as good.

Steam one! However I don't have a recommendation because I'm still waiting for my second hand iron from university to die (that's 8 years!! ) before I buy a new iron.

Thanks for the replies - looks like a steam generating one is the way to go.

Re: Help me choose an iron

A Man's Steam Iron.

You'll want one with a go faster stripe on to speed up the ironing.

You'll need one that holds at least a gallon of water so the steam won't run out half way through the job.

And when you press the steam button, it will have to make a noise like an old steam train so you know you are doing a proper job.

It will have to be made from cast iron and nothing else, remember light weight irons are for women and wimps.

There should be a beer holder on the iron as well plus a rear view mirror in case the other half comes up behind you to offer tips on doing your shirt.

Re: Help me choose an iron

IF you can find one, look for one with an anodised aluminium soleplate. My Philips is going strong and about a decade old without a single mark on it unlike stainless steel or ceramic (actually ceramic powder in resin - the ceramic doesn't wear but the resin does)
