Dork of the week award

Goes to the idiot who bought a stand alone hard disk six months ago to back up his computer in case it got stolen whilst he was on holiday.

The hard drive was hidden in a safe place so that any burglar would be unlikely to find it.

Unfortunately having bought a new laptop yesterday and needing the hard drive to transfer files and programmes over the "idiot of the week" can no longer remember where he hid it despite looking in all of the obvious and less obvious places.

Looks like I'm going to have to buy another

Priceless...

Don't worry, you'll find it... after you've bought a new one.

I didn't realise you were related to my missus: she constantly puts my passport in a safe place - different each time just to keep us on our toes - and then forgets where it is.

Dave
She must have a sister then.... and I'm married to her

Number of times my good lady has hidden stuff away for safekeeping. She once found a silver bracelet 6 months after she had 'put it away safe' while we went on holiday

Re: Dork of the week award

In the late 90's i went on holiday with a couple who put things in the over when they went out. 'What thief ever looks in an oven' they used to say. Years later i found out they stopped doing it as one of them was in a hurry and just slung something in to cook. Result was passports, diving license etc burned to a crisp.

They went to using the fridge or the washing machine.

Re: Dork of the week award

I brought a fireproof safe to avoid such examples.

I have made a fair few in my time, seem to remember strategically placing my passport somewhere some years back and never ever finding it

Unlucky Ian.
Just think in about 10,000 years someone/thing may unearth it and find out about their ancestors.

Last yr i went to do boiler swap ,the boiler was hidden by a kitchen cupboard ,me and the householder dimantled the cupboard ,when i got on the step ladders to remove the flue ,i found £2000 sat on top of the boiler behind the flue .

Apparently his missus had put it there 12 months ago but had completly forgotten about it .

Re: Dork of the week award

My Sister-in-law bought me a small safe for Christmas the year before last. It's electronic, with a key override.
I intended to bolt it to the floor of my study (part of a new extension), but that needed completely decorating, including flooring, so I couldn't install it for a few weeks.
However, later on Christmas Day, when the kids were all playing their latest game/gadget, I had a play with it, (as you do), and set the pin code to the most memorable number I could think of.

Then it got put in a corner for what turned into a few months before the study was decorated.

Come time to bolt it to the floor, Wifey asks where the fixings are. "Inside" says I.
"What about the instructions?" she asks; "also inside"
"What's the pin number?"
"...erm"
Fairly ticked off with me, she asks for the override key....

Do I win a prize?

I can see it now, mocking me. Every now and again, I try a code, but I've not cracked it yet.

I lost two important piece of my gig setup (lsdj carts, which hold loads of midi data) in october, as a result i've not been able to play a show in months.

Turned up in my bedside cabinet last week, i'm convinced the borrowers did it

If I were to hide it again I would probably hide it in the wardrobe in the middle of some clothes but obviously I didn't have the same idea last time as I've tried that one

I am always putting things in different areas in case I need them in the future and I don't lose them. However, most of of the time, I can never actually find them or they turn up after days of looking.

I gave up and bought another one on Ebay yesterday.

When I go on holiday again I intend to make an announcement on the forum where I have hidden it as I doubt whether any burglars will sit here and log into the forum for a read before nicking anything
