Handy PC Tip : Clean Your RAM & Make Your Computer Speed Better

Even though I've used this script for about six months with positive noticeable results . I've decided to delete my original post as I don't want anyone to cause any kind of damage to their PC from running a script that I posted. I admit to not being an IT nerd and as a result I cannot explain in technical detail how the script works apart from it dumping memory. Anyway I'll continue to use it as I've had no problems so far....

Thanks

AKA

Or of course if you actually need more memory you could buy some or get rid of junk that's eating the memory up!

True but even xGB of RAM gets a bit slow when editing video, photos, playing on games or like me using AutoCAD and Revit. My work PC gets left on 24/7 due to it being the default plotter PC so I use this 'Ram cleaner' instead of rebooting and it seems to work OK..

I've got 4Gb but I don't think 32bit XP can access more than 3Gb

3.5GB minus shared memory.

Yeah it's safe... but...
If you're wanting to clear your memory you should use a proper memory cleaner, they take into consideration memory links and check what is doing what before erasing it...

You'd be better off with MemMax or something similar for example.

Rebooting however is the best way to sort it

32bit OS's can access 4gb in address space in total, however alot is allocated for legacy stuff, memory on devices etc. If you have a sli 768mb graphics cards thats another 1.5gb you will loose.

Been running V64 with 8gb of ram since its release, works very nicely especially when editing large photo's and movie's, reboot maybe once a month if that.

In otherwords to take full advantage of 4gb of memory, get a 64bit OS.

Re: Handy PC Tip : Clean Your RAM & Make Your Computer Speed Better

Hmm seems a bit suspect to me, memory management is the Operating System's job so I don't see why this sort of thing should be necessary.
Can't speak for Windows, but certainly in Linux the OS utilises every part of free memory (i.e. that not currently in use by an application) for system caches, therefore making the computer faster, not slower. As soon as an application requests memory that is being used as a cache, it is instantly freed up. Free memory is wasted memory!

Does anyone know what that command actually does?

Thanks
Ben

NT does it very well unless you get some crappy app with a mem hole, it does not like running with low mem resources thou

Basically it's a very old trick from the days of Windows 98 becuase of poor memory management understanding, what it does it when you run it it uses X amount of RAM which then when you close it, it is dropped and in theory "erased"
Wether it actually works or not... I have no idea.

Like I said in previous posts, there are freeware memory cleaners out there which can do a proper job of it.
Erasing memory can break links in high priority memory access and in turn cause your machine to run slower as a result.

People actually run random lines of code people post on forums without a technical explanation of what they do

OK I see what it is trying to achieve, but seems flawed to me, as it is attempting to 'reserve' and then free up an amount of memory by using standard OS calls - but this is also the same method that an application that genuinely needs to reserve the memory would use so I can't see how this is of any benefit, and as a side effect it wipes out any memory used as cache, so actually having a detrimental effect.
I would imagine the specialist memory cleaners probably have more advanced ways of doing this properly, as of course there may be times when memory is not actually freed up by a programming bug or hung process and so may need to be re-gained. (Although a reboot has the same effect).

As an aside, I would be very wary of creating executable scripts that are found randomly on the internet and running them on your PC without knowing exactly what it does!
How would you know if the command was actually the equivalent of 'format C: /y' or 'rm * -rf' etc

Ben
