Is getting a P45 from Previous Employer essential

Quick question guys.

I walked out of my job a couple of months ago after 6 years because i was sick of being treated as a mug and treated like crap. Rather than being confrontational with my employer and have a MASSIVE argument i simply left.

I did give him 4 weeks notice but he flipped on me when i told him and then took every opportunity to slag me off so i simply left the next day.

I've got a new job which in starting in 3 months in Florida but i can't find work in the meantime. I have signed on (and i feel very ashamed as i'm not a sponger ) They asked me if i had my P45 and i said to them i won't be able to as it's simply not possible.

They didn't mention it again but am i going to be at a disadvantage in the future if i don't get it?

Thanks in Advance

I don't know tbh, but i would think a quick call to your Tax office would be the best bet.

From an employment website.

1. Employee does not have a P45

If the new employee does not have a P45 on the day that work starts the employer should give the employee a P46 form to complete. The Inland Revenue P46 form is used to obtain the new employee details and should be sent to the local PAYE tax office on the date employment starts.

Thanks mate. Looks like i'll be fine.

I'm off to work abroad for a year but i assume they inform the Inland Revenue and everyone else that i won't need to pay any tax while i'm not here.

When i get back hopefully i can just fill in a P46 and not have any issues.

I always thought it was for the right tax code to be used straight away, rather than an tempory one which is always higher, so you end up chasing a rebate for ages!

Nothing to feel ashamed of! It's the signing on and not bothering to look for work that some should feel the shame.....

I'm really trying. I'm out every day going from place to place but there's just nothing despite the fact i'll do almost anything and take the minimum wage . Shame my mates don't realize that and reckon i sit on my arse everyday

Re: Is getting a P45 from Previous Employer essential

My old company didn't send my P45 for ages after I left but as the above mentioned I just filled in the P46 at new place and everything was sorted asap. I've been to jobs in the past where the HR dept is a bit of a joke and it's taken ages for them to shift their arses and get everything sent to the Inland Revenue, when this has happened I've just been put on the emergency tax code and generally started getting tax rebates from January.

I mind it was murder going down the job centre with those damned assistants staring down their noses at me... Ahh the joys of being older and more mature.

Not so mature that I can't nip down there on days off and stick lollies to their windows...
