The village of Wootton Basset in Wiltshire

Whether you agree with war or not, the death of a young person is a tragic thing. It's even more tragic when that death occours when that young man or woman is killed in action fighting in a country thousands of miles from home in a war that many believe that they shouldn't be involved with in the first place.
Now I'm not here to stand on my soapbox and say whether or not we should be fighting in any war that doesn't immediatly threaten our shores...however, i'm here to say thanks to the people of Wooton Basset in Wiltshire.
Every time a fallen soldier comes home, he or she is flown into RAF Lyneham - the body is then driven to a mortuary and passes through Wootton Basset on route. Every time this happens, the people of the village line the streets of the route and remove their hats and bow their heads to pay their respects to Britains fallen.
The stretch of road between RAF Lyneham and the village is currently B3102. The people of the village want to get that changed officially to Highway Of Heroes in homage to the brave young men and woman that fall in far away countries.
They have started a petition to help get this done - you can do your bit by adding your name here. No matter what your feelings on war anywhere, we owe the people of this small village a debt of gratitude for showing their respects to the fallen - they've never met them, but it doesn't stop them.

Thanks for looking and if you took the time to fill in the petition, you have my gratitude...

Brian

Please don't turn this into another anti war thread...thanks

Job done, being a 'Brit brat' I have fond memories of living on and traveling through military establishments.

This is also on Facebook - so if any of you are members there, you can send it to your friends there as well.

Just to point out here - i don't actually live there. I served 22 years in the army and lost a good friend in Iraq a few years back. It doesn't matter what time of the day or night the deceased is repatriated, these people turn out to pay their respects.

Re: The village of Wootton Basset in Wiltshire

More Information:

BBC NEWS | England | Town honours dead Royal Marines
BBC NEWS | England | Respects paid to dead servicemen
BBC NEWS | England | Devon | Soldier's body flown back to UK

I grew up in Wootton Bassett and still consider it my home. I knew the town came to a standstill everytime a fallen soldier passes through, I didn't know they wanted to rename the road though.

I'll add my name to the petition.

Also just found this story in The Sun (click for story) about it.

And it was on "Inside out West" on the 4th Feb 2009 - see http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...st_04_02_2009/

I live in Swindon and Wooton Bassett is just down the road. Everytime a brave soldier is killed in action and brought home through the village, it is always published in the local newspaper as well as coverage on the news countrywide.

I applaud the people of the village showing their respect for our fallen men and women.

I will gladly sign the petition as that is the most approbiate honour that could be bestow on the villagers and to the memory of our forces killed in action.
