Re: Starting The Gym Advice Needed?
Unless you're serious about doing the whole body builder thing, you should be able to work out all your major muscle groups in one session 2 - 3 times a week, making sure that you have a 3 day muscle rest at some point in your schedule.
In between this (or in parallel), go for cardio training on the tread mill, cross trainer, row machine, etc. Spending 20 mins plus on these at 80% heart rate for your age will reap benefits in no time and help you mix things up a bit.
And I can't agree more about the diet aspect, they come hand in hand.

I was told that it helps recovery between going to the GYM but looking it up on the internet there tells me that it may have other benefits, iirc it was one of the things that was in the maximuscle protein powder that was not in the cheaper protein and thats why I started to take it. Re: Starting The Gym Advice Needed?
I have tried both of these products too, I have been around the block a bit with the protein powders. Alot of my training was done when I had hardly any money so the Holland and barret one was in favour, as was a big tub of prolab stuff. THe H&B stuff is probably good enough for us mere mortals. There are quite a few products out there now which combine protiens with other substances, this is where your money can soon evaporate !. Creatine is also another product to look at for if you start to get into this Gym lark.

Re: Starting The Gym Advice Needed?
Can I just ask why you want to suppliment protein when you were not doing full on focusing on building?
It would be a lot better to adjust your diet to be healthier and include protein into it there.
I don't see why you're looking so heavily into suppliments if you're only starting out, if you're not working out to suit your suppliments it's not going to do you any good. I hate to see the number of suggestions for suppliments here especially seeing creatine mentioned.
OP wants to keep weight down... please avoid bulking suppliments, and make sure you do not take in too much protein.
Look at them once you reach a level of fitness that you are happy with to build on what you have.
Cereal - Crunchy Nut are okay sure, Cornflakes, Wheetabix, Shreaded Wheat, Special K, Bran Flakes, Rice Crispies etc are all good.
You want at least 3 meals a day, keep your energy levels stable as much as you can.
If you want to bulk your legs up, do minimal reps on the heaviest weight you can manage. That is the best way to build, to tone you to lots of reps on lower weights.
As for a rotation:
1. Arms + Shoulders
2. Legs + Abs
3. Chest + Back

Re: Starting The Gym Advice Needed?
I had to stop taking protein shakes and bars because I was getting CHRONIC wind. When I say chronic I mean it as well, thought I was actually going to die at times and it had THE most unusual/nasty smell I have ever smelt in my life!!
You can get all the protein you need from your diet but takes quite a bit of planning and faffing!

I used to get that from some brands of protein, body fortress used to be one of the worst but they changed something in their formula and the problem went away.

Making money for whoever is selling it. Don't waste your cash as there's no actual evidence to say it's beneficial so spend your money on food instead.

Re: Starting The Gym Advice Needed?
As others have said, skip on the protein for now. You'll be wasting your money. If you want to do that, send me £30 and I'll send you back a big packet of sherbet and I'll label it Protein

Re: Starting The Gym Advice Needed?
Yeah ill might just get my tub from holland and barrett as its 50% off. And its there for me for when I need it.
So a few things I need to do
1) Make sure eat in the morning, and something for lunch if possible.
2) Cut out or cut down the cherry coke and lucozade and switch to water or cordial
3) Mix me time up with cardio work and weights on an body part.
So arms and shoulders (1 day)
So back and chest (1 day)
So legs and abs (1 day)
So that makes up 3 days of training.
How could I build that into 4 days?
I assume protien shakes are for repairing the strain of the body for the next day. As I remember myself being knackered the next day and unmotivated.

Re: Starting The Gym Advice Needed?
Your bound to feel knackered at first , its your body getting used to it . You will ache but keep it gentleish at first otherwise you risk not being able to move the next day and think "Sod that" wheres that cherry coke !. Especially if you rush into a heavy leg workout. Make sure too you stick to some proper core exercises at first too , squats/legpress , benchpress , pulldowns things that excercise at lot of your body and help with core strength. Perhaps on your fourth day do a bit more cardio and perhaps just triceps, thats if you split your arm workout into 2.

Do some more reading This is why for you, right now, buying protein is a complete waste of money.
It's not some miracle grow like you'd chuck on the lawn It's a supplement. It's in addition to a decent diet. Saying you'll have lunch if possible isn't a decent diet. Sorry, I know it sounds like I'm having a peck but I'm just trying to be constructive and I don't want you wasting your time or money
