How often do you REALLY listen to music?

I find myself in the VERY fortunate position that we have a dedicated cinema and we watch LOTS of films; I think that the effort and cost is fully justified for our use and lifestyle.

I also happen to really like music, but we just do not seem to find the time to REALLY listen to music. Sure I have an iPod and listen to this frequently when I travel up to London, but I do not constitute this as REAL listening, it more serves as a tranquil distraction whilst traveling.

For the first time in as long as I can remember, we just sat and listened to music in the cinema tonight and I love it! I just wish there was more time in life.

Ian.

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

i share the feeling, at the moment, i tend to listen in the ipod to and from work, in the gym. At home i listen to music when i'm getting ready for work in the morning and maybe just before i'm going to sleep. Rarely have the time just to sit down and listen to music nowadays.

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

I listen to the DAB radio and play a couple of LP's everyday. I am curently listening to the new Guns N' Roses on vinyl. It sounds very good.

I make a effort to listen to Pink Floyds The Wall every month and have done so for the last 14 years since I bought the LP.

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

I listen to my music everyday pretty much, I commute to work so it passes the time on the trains to and from work. Probably why I can justify spending a small foretune on IEMs and mp3 players.
It's quite funny 'cos I'm often listening while looking out the windows and I can't ear anything but the music, really ticks off the ticket checkers who are often left screaming at me for my ticket.

Have just bought some Zeppelin speakers for the i-pod and am planning to listen to a lot more music from now on as I seem to have gotten out of the habit these days.

It isn't even my favourite PF album (second favourite). It was the first PF LP I bought. I prefer DSOTM and like to listen to it less than the Wall to appreciate it more. I have 7 copies of it including several picture discs, regular version and the 30th Anniversary edition.

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

Most days i'll spend upto an hour sat in the chair, at night so it's dark, listening to music. My wife can often tell what my mood is by what I am listening to.

I left it at the Japanese varient and the 30th anniversary edition.

Ultimately if you chaps want to listen to music, you must use a device that compells you to do so. I like iPods muchly but find that you generally pick your way through music rather than really getting to grips with it.

This of course leans towards turntables . Do it you won't regret it.

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

Great topic!

As far i'm concerned, having your car radio on or your ipod on the train is not 'listening' to music, it is merely hearing music. You can only truly listen when there are no distractions and you are concentrating on what is playing.

I feel compelled to listen to music properly nearly every day. I class the artists I listen to as genius' and feel I would doing a great disservice to both them and myself if I only listened to it in an ambient manner.

They have devoted their lives to producing great music for me. It's only right that I return the favour by devoting my time to them.

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

I do have a 20GB MP3 player as well. I use it to listen while I go out but at home it is either vinyl or the very occasional CD. I find I often don't listen to whole albums on the MP3 player.

I like collecting coloured vinyl with red and yellow being my favourite.

The record is Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robot.

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

Interesting thread this and glad to see that most folk have differentiated between having music on and actually listening to it.
As TV was once described as ' chewing gum for the eyes ' I think background music is ' chewing gum for the ears '
As I spent about £5,000 on my stereo setup in 2008 and about to spend another £2,500 , I am pretty serious about my music. ( AV is taking a back seat at the moment ) Due to working away from home a fair bit , while I have music around me every day I only get to listen to music about 12 - 15 hours a week.
Nowhere near as much as I would like but I have to work to feed my habit

Late at night, -35db on the display and play Mike Oldfield's Light and Shade or Amarok depending on the mood, just a great way to round out the day

Hey Rob, what's wrong with Ambient Music, I think a better word might be casual for me it's the ambience of the music and setting that makes it so right as in dark room loud music, nothing else intrudes, you just get lost

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

Nice Gyrodec Ed, - it looks very different to my 2001 Gyro SE - the suspension system in particular.
I find that I listen more when playing vinyl, compared with when I have a CD on - makes me wish that I could have bought an LP and a CD for everything that I have bought over the past 25 years......

To answer the question posed by the OP, I suppose only once or twice a week, sadly...... although if I do get into it, the once weekly session can last a good few hours.

Started life as a normal one but had the Gert Pedersen suspension mods fitted to it. The deck is essentially unsprung now and the performance upgrade isn't small.

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

I think a recent post on another thread is just as pertinent here...

Music industry missing a trick?

The thing is, nowadays we have so many other distractions vs the days of vinyl/stereo. Add kids/family life to the equation and the days of extended optimal listening sessions are few and far between.

I do enjoy listening to music in the car now. Since I digitised my collection and hooked it all to the head unit it's a very good option. But still sub-optimal because of road noise.

Re: How often do you REALLY listen to music?

Every day, we have an IPOD in the play room next to the kitchen, we have music on between those two areas almost all day, while we cook, often while we eat, while we read, while we socialise.

A lot.

The record is Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robot.
Vinyl is still unmatched in my opinion, I find it has a warmer and richer sound.

In my job, loads of people are going cd and even mp3, I'll never stop using vinyl.....

Funny that all the cd decks are trying to emulate vinyl, that says it all, and while Pioneer have come closest to replicating that, it's still comes up short.
