1 week out of warranty-help required
Evening,
Bought a stereo from Currys 12 months and one week ago. Now the CD player has started to jump no matter what CD is being played. Tried the CD cleaner disc route but it made no difference at all.
Went back to currys today to see what they would do for me. Absolutely nothing!. They stated "its out of its guarantee so theres nowt we can do.
I'm aware of the sales of goods act (a bit anyway) and i said that electrical items are supposed to last a reasonable amount of time (longer than 12 months?) for the amount it cost(£180). if it was a 20 quid iron i wouldn't be too bothered.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what i can do now?.
Can the SOGA do anythijng else for me?.
Many thanks

Re: 1 week out of warranty-help required
You said it has to last longer than 12 months and it has
Personally I dont think you've got a leg to stand on really it's just bad luck, but maybe I might be wrong...

The thread says help required!
I'll start another that says "smart a***d comment" required just for you.

Re: 1 week out of warranty-help required
the sale of goods act mentions about lasting a reasonable length of time
i would try the manufacturer and go for a good will gesture, maybe 50% towards a new one

Re: 1 week out of warranty-help required
I would avoid going into Currys, and contact the manufacturer directly. Currys are legally obliged to help you, even after the item is out of warranty, but it doesn't necessarily mean they will.
I suspect a nicely worded letter to the manufacturer, quoting the Sales of Good act, adding the fact that their £180 CD player is clearly not conforming, will probably bear fruit.

You were contradicting yourself and you're not legally entitled to anything, which is what you asked. I was just stating that...
As stated you can try the manufacturer but legally you have nothing.

One year and a week is not a reasonable length of time, regardless how much the item was used.
If you get no where contacting the relevant manufacturers customer service,
and they will try and fob you off.
Try the Managing Director usually works a treat if you are polite.
What Brand was it ?

Re: 1 week out of warranty-help required
You have that route through the Sale of Goods Act.
I would be more incline to say the goods failed a couple of weeks ago but that you were unable to make it to the store then, hence your visit now. If necessary say you phoned the Currys customer service line to check that it was ok, and they said it would be no problem.
Given the rubbish service Currys offer you should feel no remorse in telling a little white lie, because a 1 week after warranty failure is unacceptable.
Failing that go the SoG route as already recommended.

Re: 1 week out of warranty-help required
"Warranty" is a misnomer and a misused term by retailers. Anyway,...
Your statutory rights are not precluded by any "guarantee". The "guarantee" expiring is of no consequence and neither her nor there. Be firm, and be polite. Ask to speak to the manager instead of an employee

Re: 1 week out of warranty-help required
Here's another thread supporting the fact that if you have the time and energy you can probably sort out a replacement / repair / refund even if you did not choose to take out an extended warranty...
Amazon completely oblivious to my consumer rights - Fuming!
Hope you don't mind me saying but I think the "smart arsed" comment is a little unfair. As I say in that thread (and perhaps I'm playing things with too much of a straight bat) at the point of sale you can choose to taken an extended warranty, or take the default manufacturer's 12 month warranty.
The question uppermost in my mind is what is a "reasonable length of time" for something costing £180 to last? Who defines it? Where is it written down? Sure, 12 months seems not enough, but if it's not 12 months, what is it?
Either way, I wish you luck, and hope you don't think I'm being smart arsed.

Re: 1 week out of warranty-help required
A polite letter sent registered post maybe better.
Just ask the customer service for his/her name and the address.
Thought Pure were good, everything breaks down i suppose, but five years is more a reasonable amout of time.
Good luck

Re: 1 week out of warranty-help required
The reply from LFC_SL is spot on.
Warrantys and guarantees are all good and well, but the law is on your side, full stop.
Dont contact the manufacturer, the contract is with currys. Ask them for a replacement or repair. If none is forthcoming, take name of manager, and write to HQ. If that fails, file a small claim, and watch them dance to your tune. Be sure to claim back the cost of filing the small claim.

Yep, that's correct but personally I wouldn't bother with contacting 'HQ,' the shop manager is the representative of the business.
