Need any 100 watt light bulbs?

Interesting item on BBC breakfast this morning about the manufacture of 100watt light bulbs becoming illegal later this year. One shop which normally sells about 10 per day bought in a stock of 600 and sold out within a few hours. Apparantly queues were forming outside the door.

I suppose most people use low energy bulbs these days, but if you have a light fitting for which theres no suitable LE bulb, then you could have a problem. Also some dimmers and time switches are not suitable for LE bulbs.

Lower wattage bulbs will also become illegal later on.

Re: Need any 100 watt light bulbs?

I bumped into an elderly couple failing to buy 100W light bulbs in Tesco. Half an hour later I saw them in B&Q also failing to find any...

How soon till you start seeing them on ebay at £5 a go

Re: Need any 100 watt light bulbs?

I don't see what all the fuss is about to be perfectly honest, as long as I still have light to read by and see where i'm walking i'm not fussed.

Doesn't have a big impact on me...

You can get LE bulbs that can suit fittings and can be dimmed, people just want to make a fuss over nothing.

People never like change.

Time to buy shares in a lightbulb company?

Had the same thought... but...
If the manufacture of the is illegal, surely you'll not be allowed to sell them legally?

Or will you be able to?

Re: Need any 100 watt light bulbs?

I'm surprised it's taken people so long to think of stocking up on them. I bought 100 bulbs about 18 months ago.

They cost me 16p each, so if I can find someone to buy them for £5 each I'll sell them, as I only bought them to make sure I still had fully dimmable bulbs until the LE ones became dimmable, and they're available now.

Good point, I think they're illegal to make now, but If I sold one to you it wouldn't be illegal?

Re: Need any 100 watt light bulbs?

I've gone the energy saving equivalent for most of the bulbs, they are 3 for a pound in Homebase for philips ones which are really good, bright, and get to full brightness very quickly..

I sourced some cheapish 50mm spots from ikea (1.50 each) but they do take a minute or two to really get going.

Just looking for some cheapish 70mm spots.

Relating to the OP I do understand the nanny state backlash and people wanting traditional 100w bulbs, though I only had one in the house, all others were 60w or 40w. But when you have kids who tend to leave every bulb on all the time in the house, the elec prices are such that it's no joke now.

Re: Need any 100 watt light bulbs?

It's the dimmer switch that annoys me. All our bulbs are energy saving except for the bathroom (the one place where you need light fast for a short time) and 2 dimmer switches. The bulbs for dimmers haven't existed up to recently, and of course they are a fortune (long live capitalism eh), so I'll be stockpiling bulbs for those 2 this weekend.

Re: Need any 100 watt light bulbs?

I'm not too bothered- I've been switching most bulbs over as and when they need changing. I'd be interested in recomendations for candle shaped screw bulbs that work with a dimmer though as I've left those on filament bulbs until now.

Arthurdentpc makes a valid point about the bathroom though- I'll need to remember to have a few 40/60w types handy as they'll bridge the gap to those natty LED quick start types.

I have some X10 Home Automation switches that are activated from the burgler alarm system. Some LE bulbs work on on these, but others just flicker when switched on. I also had an electronic digital time switch in my previous house and the instructions for that clearly stated 'cannot be used with LE bulbs'.

Need any 100 watt light bulbs?

Hello

I am a BBC journalist looking for someone who has stockpiled 'traditional' lightbulbs because they are not keen on the energy saving ones that are about to become the only choice. Would you be keen to talk to me on this subject? My number is 07944121021 and my email is jenni.regan@bbc.co.uk

Many thanks
Jenni

Hi Jenni,

Welcome to AVF

Would it be possible for you to send a memo around all the BBC Jurno's, news departments etc recommending they insert the word Sith in front of "Lord Mandelson" from now on.

Thanks

As for the bulbs I am afraid I gave in, I was considering stock piling 60 and 40 watt bulbs but when our local DIY store started offering 5 60w or 40w equivalent energy efficient bulbs for £1 I took the plunge...

There was a bulb distributer (if that is what they are called) on the radio last night saying that although they are no longer manufacturing the old type bulbs from 01st Sept, companies are allowed to sell what they have in stock. He said that they had around three months worth left.
