Nissan UK axing jobs!

Probably comes as no surprise but 1200 jobs to go at the Sunderland plant dubbed the 'most productive and efficient car plant in the world'.

This comes at another bad time as I work for Honda in Swindon where the Civic and CRV are manufactured and can see this news further affecting our jobs.

Already been off work for 3 weeks for Xmas shutdown, go back on the 12 Jan for 3 weeks then off for 2 months due to no production.

At this time Honda are looking for 1000 people to leave voluntarily and so far 500 have taken this up. I have been quoted a good size lump to consider leaving and was using the existing time off to think about it.

Due to the above news the offer is looking far more appealing as can't see other car manufacturers, just not Honda, not been affected by Nissans decision.

Its a risk I stay or go....

Re: Nissan UK axing jobs!

You've got to hand it to the directors though, they get paid huge wads but their incisive intellect is beyond reproach. I mean, look at their forward proactive thinking. Imagine the meeting....

"OK guys, annual sales like for like are down less than 1%"

Smug smiles all round. But then the bomb-shell.

"But we were down over 25% in December like-for-like! What shall we do?"

Someone pipes up....

"Sack 25% of the work force?"

"Great idea! How many do we employ?"

"4800".

"OK we'll sack 1200! Tell the media we'll be looking to minimise impact on families, safeguard future viability, that sort of BS".

"OK, what's next on the agenda?"

"Ah, that'll be what we're awarding ourselves as bonuses..."

They're just trying to play the government for a handout. The factory is in a Labour constituency, so they know they'll get one.

Even with a government hand out this is not going to save jobs because customers are not buying brand new cars.

Anyway majority japanese companies will not take a hand out, Honda been one of them. Everything is dictated from Japan.

I work at a manufacturing plant in Manchester that supplies both Honda & Nissan , very lean times for everyone involved in our industry.

Thats the thing too. Not only is the actual car manufacturers going to suffer, its also all the suppliers. Honda, for one, deals with about 100. Two have already gone bust and engineers from Honda had to go there over the Xmas period to move the machines to other suppliers.

If 2 have gone then there bound to be more.

1200 going at Nissan then add on more from suppliers, catering etc....all in all that figure could double....knock on effect.
