Is it worth reporting phishing emails to banks?

I keep getting phishing emails, even supposedly from banks and credit card people I have never used. I have been forwarding them on to the relevant fraud department at each bank - and now have a long list of email addresses for all the relevant banks in my address book.

It only takes me a moment to send them on but am I wasting my time?

Most never bother to reply. I assume they must get thousands.

The Bank of America did reply to me though saying they would investigate and shut down the relevant site if needs be.

Re: Is it worth reporting phishing emails to banks?

I never bother as most of the ones I get the link has expired by the time I check it out, they seem to get stung pretty quick, someone else will always report it.

If people actually get fooled by these then they need a lesson in practices of security and safety anyways.

Re: Is it worth reporting phishing emails to banks?

It depends how the bank perceives risk, but I would say that if it gets into the right hands, it will at least be given a once-over. It depends how efficient your bank's internal communication practices are. If you send it straight to customer services, they'll just look at it blankly and hit delete. If it's a dedicated email account going to the right area, it will probably be reviewed. I would not expect a response on it though - anything that you send through probably won't be dealt with by a customer-facing entity - far more likely to be IT and Risk guys who investigate it, and they will never send you a "Dear Mr X, Thank you so much for your information" letter - they'll just get on with addressing the issue, if there is one.

Re: Is it worth reporting phishing emails to banks?

Report them to your email provider. It'll be investigated at added to the blacklist. For example, I have "mark as junk (report) and "report as phising scam".
