Not a joke. What is a joke is that Australian Prime Minister John Howard is also getting one.

Former Australian Prime Minister. Although not quite sure why it is more of a joke than Blair getting it.

Re: Blair to get US Medal of Freedom

America medal of freedom!

Does that entitle the holder to invade any country they choose ?
May also entitle the holder to day release from Guantanamo Bay

America and freedom,
Two words that do not seem to sit well together
(contradiction in terms, was the saying I was looking for)

and yet he was elected 3 times by UK voters, even after the Iraq invasion, including by some of the usual suspects in avforums...

and if he was still leader of the labour party, they would still be prepared to re-elect him again ...

so somebody loves him

Has anyone heard from him lately? As a middle east envoy you'd think you'd hear more from him than from Sarkozy doing something about the current conflict.

Too true....considering he is just about the last person to enter the discussions over the current crisis,it's hard to see what contribution he's made to warrant any award at all.

BBC NEWS | Politics | Gaza solution is possible - Blair

Quote:
Gaza solution is possible - Blair

The conflict between Israel and Hamas can be resolved, former UK prime minister Tony Blair has insisted.

Mr Blair, now a Middle East envoy, said there was a "basis" for an immediate ceasefire if the supply of arms into Gaza from Egypt was halted.

I do not see what is so surprising that Bush wishes to confer such an honour upon one of his staunchest allies as one of his last Presidential acts

And here is another act: BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | US vows 'huge' marine protection

Nobody is suprised by it, the bone of contention is that may of us feel the last thing Blair deserves is a medal for his actions in Iraq.

who knows? but the fact is the UK electorate was given the opportunity post the Iraq war to pass judgement on what Blair did (not what someone might have), and chose to re-elect him. So they clearly didn't care that much about it. If he was so evil as everyone here claims they would have not re-elected him full stop. (same for Bush of course, who was also re-elected)

Some people in the Uk were not bothered about he's lies and crimes at the time of the elections here.
I didn't vote, i voted for them the first time as my dad Was a dedicated Labour member but we have n't vote for any party since.

I think people here at the time where more bothered by house prices and what would happen if the Tories got back in.
God forbid they lost any value on the wonderfully high values back then.

Same with the Us, they were also fooled into thinking Bush was the only person capable of finishing the Job.
When actually it was General Petraeus who made the difference not Bush.

Is n't Politics great.

By uk electorate thats the people who actually bothered to vote I recall the turn out being pretty low the last time could be down to sticking with the devil you know. Im really not sure just speculating here, I certainly don't understand americans as I can see few reasons why bush got his first term and even fewer reason to explain him winning the second term.

I think it's more a case of an insane amount of people who will not vote for anyone else than Labour to save their lives. No matter what they do. These people will probably have convinced themselves that somehow the war was caused by the Tories

Re: Blair to get US Medal of Freedom

It's pretty simple Blair was incredibly popular after 1997 and the more popular you are the bigger you fall when making a mistake, thanks to the media.
I prefer to take a more balanced view, internationally he's still well respected. He did play a key role in Kosovo and The good friday agreement. Most people internationally agree good things were done here. Iraq is the black mark on Blair and it all depends on how it all pans out in the end, if in 10 years time Iraq is functioning democratically it'll all be forgotten. How likely this is only time will tell.

As a politician (like him or not) he was very good, you don't win 3 term if your not. This is also the reason why Cameron has copied every aspect of Blair, in fact I call him Blair's clone. It's made him the most popular Tory leader in years, but the British public is far more sceptical today.
