Do you like your job?
I have been working for 15 years now and it’s the same thing day in day out, obviously I have changed jobs a few times but still in the same industry IT.
I guess I just dislike IT but have a mortgage and everything else so I just can’t change career, I’m in mid 30s now but it’s just depresses me when i have to go work and on Sundays and week evening I’m scared to the next day!
Any of you feel this way.

Re: Do you like your job?
I don't dislike it...
I browse AVF etc so I can't complain, could be worse.

Re: Do you like your job?
I'm a software engineering been working only 1.5 years and I'm already bored, mainly because I'd like to do more challenging programming. But it's great when something new comes along.

Erm, it's repetitive yeah, I'd say I have a good neighbour so I work between the banter and it keeps me going, I have bills too but know when to pack it in cos life's too short.

Re: Do you like your job?
Prior to my current job I was a network administrator - designing, implementing and maintaining etc. For the most part, I loved it. Had some poxy points but generally I enjoyed it. I'm an IT tutor now, teaching networking n' stuff and I really like this as well. Guess I'm just lucky.
However, in order to be a tutor I have to do a teaching qualification - the PGCE/CertEd and I'm studying a law degree already... so it gets busy!

I'm 22 and originally started out my degree with the Open University. I've since changed, however I can and will vouch for the OU and say they're really very good. I changed to a bricks and mortar university for various reasons but I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the OU. If you feel stuck, do a course in whatever else you're interested in and it'll provide you with a path out of IT. Mid 30s is hardly past it

Re: Do you like your job?
I enjoy what I'm doing now, but for many years I was like you and thought there was no way out.
I had stumbled into accountancy and couldn't get out because it was all I knew.....I've been working in the recycling and quarrying sectors for about 10 yrs now and no longer dread getting up in the morning (apart from the obvious downturn in business )

Agree 110%
I'm a "systems consultant" for a better word, i meet people week in week out and explain how poor there networks are and unstable, go through disaster recovery plans and basically get agreement 100% then when i tell them how much - and i mean cheaper than cheap they suck through there teeth and go and await there system to crash and phone me up asking for help.
I'm 36 married with a 6month old son, been in I.T for 20 years and it's gone from excellent to bad to worse, salaries are poor, job satisfaction is beyond poor and even tho it changes from day to day problem to problem it's just tedious.
You spend £££ on training get good qualifications then spend your working day fixing end user mistakes and the evening revising for the latest O/S or some 3rd party software the boss of some company wants installing on his server that will break more than it fixes lol
Hmm rant? who got me started!!!
The missus is in Administration for Royal Mail - she gets a larger salary and works 37.5 hrs a week - i work over 60 and get paid less - why? Because the industry is flooded with experianced 30+ people who cant get jobs because we have been flooded by Eastern Europeans who will do the job for a lot less £££
I wish i didnt care lol

Agree....when I first got into call centres there was the money (and the desire) to invest. Now?? Nothing. I work for a large, world wide company, and we have front end customer supporting systems that are not just way out of date, but are actually unsupported. Totally. If they fell over, eBay for spare parts would be the best (only) option. And when you tell them, they agree, nod their heads and then spend the money on another direct mail campaign.
Its a joke.
I would like my job, if it was the same as it was some years ago.....now? It just pays the bills and I'm too old to start again.

Re: Do you like your job?
I love my job. I'm only 19 years old and 3 months into it, but it's absolutely brilliant so far. I work in the paper industry now, really inspiring work done by graphic designers which is right up my street!

Funny thing is she just had a £1k payrise, she also has a full pension, health scheme and 25 days off! And she doesnt know how to use EXCEL lol
I'm thinking of going into teaching to try and get job security/satisfaction. At the end of the day there is no job security in .I.T. at all.

I recommend teaching if your heart is in it. I took a pay cut as I really wanted to try it out and I'm only 22 so I thought I was young enough to make the transition back into industry should I wish to... and I'm really glad I tried it out as I love it. I teach 16-19 year olds computer networking and computing in general etc and it's a lot of fun most of the time. Sure it's bogged down in bureaucracy but hey, everywhere has downsides!
I'm surprised that you're getting so ripped off in your IT role. Horrible time to even suggest this considering the current climate but I think I'd look for a new employer if I were you!
