Do you like your job?

I have been working for 15 years now and it’s the same thing day in day out, obviously I have changed jobs a few times but still in the same industry IT.

I guess I just dislike IT but have a mortgage and everything else so I just can’t change career, I’m in mid 30s now but it’s just depresses me when i have to go work and on Sundays and week evening I’m scared to the next day!

Any of you feel this way.

I don't dislike it...

I browse AVF etc so I can't complain, could be worse.

Re: Do you like your job?

I'm a software engineering been working only 1.5 years and I'm already bored, mainly because I'd like to do more challenging programming. But it's great when something new comes along.

Erm, it's repetitive yeah, I'd say I have a good neighbour so I work between the banter and it keeps me going, I have bills too but know when to pack it in cos life's too short.

Re: Do you like your job?

Prior to my current job I was a network administrator - designing, implementing and maintaining etc. For the most part, I loved it. Had some poxy points but generally I enjoyed it. I'm an IT tutor now, teaching networking n' stuff and I really like this as well. Guess I'm just lucky.

However, in order to be a tutor I have to do a teaching qualification - the PGCE/CertEd and I'm studying a law degree already... so it gets busy!

I'm 22 and originally started out my degree with the Open University. I've since changed, however I can and will vouch for the OU and say they're really very good. I changed to a bricks and mortar university for various reasons but I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the OU. If you feel stuck, do a course in whatever else you're interested in and it'll provide you with a path out of IT. Mid 30s is hardly past it

Re: Do you like your job?

I enjoy what I'm doing now, but for many years I was like you and thought there was no way out.

I had stumbled into accountancy and couldn't get out because it was all I knew.....I've been working in the recycling and quarrying sectors for about 10 yrs now and no longer dread getting up in the morning (apart from the obvious downturn in business )

Agree 110%

I'm a "systems consultant" for a better word, i meet people week in week out and explain how poor there networks are and unstable, go through disaster recovery plans and basically get agreement 100% then when i tell them how much - and i mean cheaper than cheap they suck through there teeth and go and await there system to crash and phone me up asking for help.

I'm 36 married with a 6month old son, been in I.T for 20 years and it's gone from excellent to bad to worse, salaries are poor, job satisfaction is beyond poor and even tho it changes from day to day problem to problem it's just tedious.

You spend £££ on training get good qualifications then spend your working day fixing end user mistakes and the evening revising for the latest O/S or some 3rd party software the boss of some company wants installing on his server that will break more than it fixes lol

Hmm rant? who got me started!!!

The missus is in Administration for Royal Mail - she gets a larger salary and works 37.5 hrs a week - i work over 60 and get paid less - why? Because the industry is flooded with experianced 30+ people who cant get jobs because we have been flooded by Eastern Europeans who will do the job for a lot less £££

I wish i didnt care lol

Agree....when I first got into call centres there was the money (and the desire) to invest. Now?? Nothing. I work for a large, world wide company, and we have front end customer supporting systems that are not just way out of date, but are actually unsupported. Totally. If they fell over, eBay for spare parts would be the best (only) option. And when you tell them, they agree, nod their heads and then spend the money on another direct mail campaign.

Its a joke.

I would like my job, if it was the same as it was some years ago.....now? It just pays the bills and I'm too old to start again.

I love my job. I'm only 19 years old and 3 months into it, but it's absolutely brilliant so far. I work in the paper industry now, really inspiring work done by graphic designers which is right up my street!

I'm thinking of going into teaching to try and get job security/satisfaction. At the end of the day there is no job security in .I.T. at all.

I recommend teaching if your heart is in it. I took a pay cut as I really wanted to try it out and I'm only 22 so I thought I was young enough to make the transition back into industry should I wish to... and I'm really glad I tried it out as I love it. I teach 16-19 year olds computer networking and computing in general etc and it's a lot of fun most of the time. Sure it's bogged down in bureaucracy but hey, everywhere has downsides!

I'm surprised that you're getting so ripped off in your IT role. Horrible time to even suggest this considering the current climate but I think I'd look for a new employer if I were you!

Re: Do you like your job?

I love my job, it's varied, I work from home often, the pay is excellent and the job satisfaction is immense. It can be stressful but that adds to the buzz, if things don't go to plan, the buck stops with me

My wife is a primary school teacher at a school 10 minutes away walking distance and she also loves her job.

I started a new topic to find out more than what i know/think i know lol

Problem with chaging career's is there are hundreds if not thousands of 'engineers' looking for better work, so it's driving salaries down and with the current market employers are getting the best of the best for less.

Fact is a good company employer will now be looking at changing his/her staff, it makes good business sense im afraid.

Indeed. However, if you apply and get an interview and are confident in yourself and your abilities... there's no reason why you can't make yourself stand out. But I understand what you mean. It's pretty tough right now. I have replied to your new thread. Feel free to ask any questions.

Getting the job is not the problem, getting a job that pays what you demand is difficult.

I'm a CCNA MCSE qualified 20yrs experiance and they want to pay me an offensive low rate. But if you're unemployed have a mortgage in trouble - you would take it - thats where they are winning.

Cheers for the other post

Re: Do you like your job?

I've only been working 4 months and only on a 1 year placement from Uni and was starting to get bored as it was teh same tests on the same stuff everyday and was very repetative but i've now been moved to a research project not just analysis and am really enjoying it as it's a nice challenge of trying to work out how to develop and improve a methods for the company not just mindlessly following one of the methods everyday that anyone could do really.

I love my job too.

30+ days holiday, flexible working, nice people, a beautiful building with a view of the sea and a final salary pension. Best of all, its challenging, interesting and safe from the economic downturn. I'll never be rich working in the public sector, but it certainly pays all the bills and gives me some spending money. No complaints here.

I used to love it when we were allowed to do it correctly. Now we have to do it quickly which has resulted in us doing it poorly and it ends up costing more overall.

It stinks

My mate got a £5k payrise just because she had been with the company 2 years. She barely does any work (just tells people what to do in an office) and is now on £30k a year.

Re: Do you like your job?

I love my new job. I had been working for one of the large multinational IT companies (now owned by a company who might be famous for making printers), but got fed up how slow things took to happen, lack of pay rises, lack of bonuses, and lack of training.

Now i'm with a small comapny with jut 50 employees, things get down fast, salary and bonuses are good, and i've got more say in the direction of things than ever. Going to work is now like doing a hobby, it's great. You know you've got it good when you wake up in the morning, and look forward to going into work.

Re: Do you like your job?

I'm utterly bored by my job. Been in Software Engineering for 23 years and as a result I have a reasonably paid middle management position.

I could count myself lucky. I work in slow paced sector (Defence) so there is little stress and normal hours. I get 27 days holiday, final salary pension, company car, health scheme etc. The pay is pretty good (though I could get upto twice as much if I had forged my career in a different market sector, but with a lot more stress and a lot less family time).

The problem is with my 'increased responsibility', the changing face of computing and increasing emphasis on process improvement (quality, ISO, CMMI) the job has lost it's spark.

It has become much more about spreadsheets, powerpoints and finance than the inventing, designing and creating that I enjoyed. Each day I just go to work and turn the wheel on the sausage machine a little more.

Mid-life crisis - some days I feel like just chucking it and doing something more fulfilling but then I come down to earth and think of the hosue, family, education etc that are my real responsibilities.

Cheers,

Nigel

Re: Do you like your job?

I do love my job.

Been here for 11 years now but have my own area of expertise and am learning new technologies all the time. I work as a software engineer writing call centrre software. I've done a lot of work integrating to the old fashioned telephone systems and now getting more and more into Voice over IP.

I wish i didnt care lol

..
Apart from the 6 month son, you've stolen my life!

However, you also missed out the famous "certified" technicians. Interviewed one chap last week who passed his MCSE (that's seven exams) in 5 days. When asked which exams he'd taken he "couldn't remember".

Does your blood boil when you see the adverts on TV saying "the average salary in I.T is £40k - Ring this number to start training now"?
