Christmas work/pay...

Two things just don't seem right to me this Christmas! Firstly, I got a £300 bonus, lovely, much appreciated considering the crunch and all. However, I got tax'd £93 of that... just seems a bit much to me? Does that seem normal? Wish they'd given it to us in cash!

Secondly, my girlfriend has been at her job for six months, as a care worker. Started there as part time but has gradually been increasing her hours to get more money. She's happy with this, but... she's being forced to work Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day (12hrs!) and New Year's Day seems like a pisstake to me, I wouldn't stand for it. But she says her contract says something along the lines of she could be asked to work any time... don't suppose there's anything she can say to get out of it!?

20% Tax and 11% National Insurance on £300 is £93 so assuming you are a basic rate tax payer it's correct.

Re: Christmas work/pay...

tax wise, working full time, earning between say £15k-£40k roughly, you would pay 20% tax and 11% NI on your bonus. if in the 40% tax bracket obviously you would pay double the tax on the bonus

there is no statutory right to any specific days off, including bank holidays, christmas day, new years day, etc, and likewise no right to be paid anything other than your standard rate of pay. it's a contractual matter if you are required to work bank holidays, xmas day, NY day etc

in certain types of work it may be important or essential to the needs of the organisation to have staff working all days of the year, such as police, nurses, firemen and other emergency staff, and even some call centre staff. in some situations staff are offered bonus payments and/or overtime to work what some may feel are unsociable days/hours, but for certain jobs it's a case of business as normal to some degree as things can't shut down and be put on hold for 24 hours, and it would appear being a care worker may fall under that category. unfortunately if she has agreed to those terms and conditions of employment she is contractually bound by them

Re: Christmas work/pay...

Your exployer could have put travel expenses down to give you a bonus instead of paying cash - keeps the accounts balanced.
Also means you don't get taxed on it.

Though they've done it legit

Out of interest, what tax and NI do you pay on earnings under £15k?

As regards to my girlfriend's job, it's just annoying as she started part time and is now working double what she intended to do at the beginning. I wonder if there's something signed for that was part time?

Re: Christmas work/pay...

I know, it's feels like a kick in the teeth doesn't it.

I know I'm very fortunate but it still hurts when I get told my annual bonus is around £7,000 but that I've got to give £3,000 of it to Alistair Darling.

BTW if you had been paid in cash you may of got away with it but both you and your employer would be in serious trouble if found out.

As stated, 20% and 11%. Income tax doesn't kick in until you exceed your personal allowance. NI is paid on all earnings above £105 and below £770 per week. Above £770 per week NI is 1%.

Cheers,

Nigel

What we do in our office/work place. We swap "days". As a muslim i ask somone to work my day/s and i will work theirs. I will be working x-mas day and new years day. I have no issues with working these days and dont mind normal pay, its a normal day for me.
As long as the person is prepared to work my Eid days, which always are before X-mas

Re: Christmas work/pay...

Just an update, she managed to get boxing day off as she was just covering for someone else and the boss didn't think it was fair so has pulled the other person back in again. Her mum's a nurse and is working early Christmas Day anyway so they're gonna have a proper Christmas on boxing day instead!

Well at least I got loads of wine as well from the company
