The advice is aimed at ensuring families stay safe at Christmas
Ministers are warning about the dangers of gravy "exploding" in microwaves as they seek to cut the 80,000 accidents which happen in homes each Christmas.
In all, more than 80,000 people are expected to turn up at A&E departments after accidents at home during the 12 days of Christmas.
Typical Christmas Day accidents, which have sent people to hospital, include:
Parents stabbing themselves with scissors they’ve grabbed instead of screwdrivers to assemble toys
People cutting themselves with knives they are using to open presents too quickly
Children falling off rocking horses or smashing new bikes into walls
Tripping over toys and trailing cables in the rush to try out new computers and other appliances
Gravy exploding in microwave ovens, hot fat spilled on the cook trying to grapple with a big turkey and nasty cuts when chopping piles of vegetables
Tipsy party guests toppling down stairs or crashing to the floor when they miss their seat at the dinner table
Other mishaps around Christmas time include: about 1,000 people going to hospital after accidents with Christmas trees; another 1,000 hurt by trimmings or when decorating their homes; and 350 hurt by Christmas tree lights - some people fall while putting them up, children swallow the bulbs and others get electric shocks and burns from faulty lights.
Re: Have a Safe Christmas - and watch out for exploding gravy!
It doesnt actually take much of an explosion to blow a door open on the microwave, especially a lot of new ones that you just pull and dont have to push a release button.
still takes a bit of pressure/force to do that either way, i'll remember not to sit there with my face infront of the microwave watching it spin in future.

Seriously be very careful when warming liquids in the microwave, a few years ago i nearly burnt myself badly when making a mug of hot chocolate, i superheated the milk and something similar happened, fortunately i wasnt holding the mug at the time.
Another one to be careful of all throughout the year but is worth highlighting at christmas comes from my mother who's been a nurse for 30 years, and thats to be very careful about loading sharp knives securely in the dishwasher, every year the hospitals see people stabbed in the feet from knives dropping out the top rack of the dishwasher that havent been put in securely!
Be safe out there guys!

Sounds like you've had some practice blowing up microwaves...worrying!

Also, a lot of people risk losing the use of one hand when removing the stone from avocados. If the stone doesn't come away easily, stop and take care because the knife can get caught on the stone, and when you push a bit harder the knife slips through the soft flesh of the fruit and into the tendons in your hand. This quite often requires urgent micro-surgery if the use of the hand is to be saved. I was told this by a world renown hand and wrist expert at Le Mans, where they have a specialist clinic and then 3 months later, I met someone who had actually done exactly that.
And I do believe they are terrible for your cholesterol too. They should be banned. Or served with a statin sauce.

Shouldn't have the dining table on the landing
Seriously when I heard this story on todays news, I thought if the leaflet's target audience have a lower A&E visit rate than the general population over Christmas, they may be distributed nationwide next year. Should recoup the cost of the normally extra workload.
