Loft insulators made my loft cold!

About 6 months ago people came and offered us free loft insulation and we accepted. They came back the next day and put some air block in the roof and now the loft is freezing and there is a terrible draft. I fear that all the stuff that I store in the loft will be ruuined (guitars and amps etc)

I climbed up and blocked them up yesterday.

Have I done the right thing?

Re: Loft insulators made my loft cold!

Don't block up any ventilation. Condensation will occur and you could end up with a very damp loft space and eventually rotting timbers!.

Ventilation is essential when insulating lofts.

The fact that your loft is cold proves that the insulation is doing its job by not letting hat rise from the rooms below.

Re: Loft insulators made my loft cold!

But it's wrecking my stuff in the loft and it is more like a gust than a bit of airflow.

I might partially unblock some of it after the winter maybe.

Edit: I've never had any damp before, everything is now starting to feel damp because of the cold air in there.

you will regret it if you dont unblock.Moisture MUST be able o ventilate out.You can always wrap whatever it is you are worried about

Re: Loft insulators made my loft cold!

Store your guitars + amps in a more suitable location?

All we keep in our loft is the christmas decorations in their boxes.

Since the loft people did the insulation they said its best not to keep to much in there, since we had a huge cleanout before we wanted to keep it mess free

It's freezing up there because the insulation has stopped the heat escaping (i.e. being wasted) from your rooms below which is exactly it's purpose! In summer, it will be unbearably hot up there too, so ideally you need to store your equipment somewhere else I'm afraid if it is susceptible to damage from temperature variations. It shouldn't get damp as long as you have enough ventilation and ensure that there are lids on any water storage tanks you might have up there (very important),
