Physics / Maths questions help Please !..

I've got a couple of Beam analysis questions as part of a piece of coursework and since I've done no real maths in 12 years I'm struggling a bit..Any advice welcomed....I'm going to have another crack at them today so it will be interesting to see if I'm on the right tracks..

First step (and it's been a while since I've done this!) - calculate your reaction forces (the supports) by taking moments around them.

Once you've done that, it's a doddle PL/4 for point loads and WL (squared)/8 for udls - just remember, max BM = min shear, and there will be zero shear at the end of the cantilever, and zero bending over the end support.

Good luck!

Re: Physics / Maths questions help Please !..

I had a go at Q2 at lunchtime, and say the left pinned support is RA and the right roller support is RB...1st I summed the verticals: v = - (7.2 x 23) + RA + RB = 0, so -165 + RA +RB = 0...Find RA and RB

I then took the moments around RA at the left hand side :

MRB @ LHS (23kN x 2m) x 2/2 = right hand side (RHS)

RHS (23 x 4.2 x 4.2/2) + 23 x 1 x 1/1, so
46 = 225.86 + 23 - RB x 7.2
46 = 225.86 - 7.2RB
7.2RB = 225.86 - 46 = 179.86
RB = 179.86 / 7.2 = 24.98
RB = 24.98

- 165.6kN + RA + 24.98 kN = 0
RA = 165.6kN - 24.89 kN
RA= 140.71kN
RB = 24.89kN

Does that make any sense , I just can't get my head round it, guess I should have spoke up in the lectures
