I would have thought it would be ok, as long as you have confirmation that your father has paid to be on the flight you should be able to take that to the check in desk.

Re: Ryan Air and Checking in

Ryanair make me laugh! .. They have started a new promotion today with one million £5 flights! ... Great, I think, and proceed to book 4 return flights from City of Derry airport to Birmingham, next month. I go through all the booking process and at the end, it gives choices of payment... I choose Mastercard or Maestro, and.. it adds on a whopping £32!!!!!! ... However, if I were to pay by "visa electron" ... there's no additional charge! What the frig?
I know it's only £32 and the flights are cheap, but it's the principle!... What a shower of *****!

Don't worry, just booked some flights for £0 each way per adult and in the end paid £170 or so because a baby who doesn't get a seat or luggage allowance has to pay £16 each way, luggage costs money too, airport tax and then if you don't want to get trampled when boarding you pay for priority boarding.

Unfortunately still way cheaper than other airlines.

Re: Ryan Air and Checking in

That's frigging scandalous, Jenn! I guess there is always someone with a worse tale than your own! ... Yes, they are still cheaper, but a little transparency in their pricing wouldn't change them being cheaper and would stop many being disgruntled at the paypoint!
However, oneupmanship rules in this competitive market and so, unfortunately does the associated disingenuous prices! I am annoyed really because they have charged £32 for processing a credit card... calling it a handling charge (£4 per person each way!!!!!!) What handling charge? I press confirm and ten seconds later, the money money ends up in their coffers! ONE TRANSACTION, NO-ONE ELSE INVOLVED...NO-ONE HAVING TO SIT IN A SWELTERING ROOM AND PHYSICALLY COUNT MY TATTY FIVERS! ... and then they have the temerity to charge me £4 a go, 8 TIMES!!!!

I'd better to and have a lie down ...

Have a good trip, anyway, Jenn!

I thought that there miss advertising had been looked in to by Trading Standards or something a while back as you never get the flight for what is advertised.

They maybe cheap but you get what you pay for usually and I have found the staff on the flights terrible, rude, obnoxious, poorly managed queuing system and staff who forget that you are the customer.

Trouble is if you want to fly from a smallish local airport to another smallish local airport, you're looking at Ryanair or one of the big boys at 3-4 times the price and 8 hours flight through changes and finish the trip on a train, not an option with a baby.

I'd gladly pay £50 more for the same flight with one of the big boys.

That's the thing though, although I don't like Ryanair, without them flight travel would be a lot more limited and expensive. They have made use of the local airports which the big boys always avoided.

Don't get me started on the pricing and add-ons though

Re: Ryan Air and Checking in

Sorry to completely derail the thread, but what irks me more than anything about them now, is that everytime they email with a promotion, they never pluralise the unit of currency.

I.e.: 1 MILLION SEATS FOR 5 EURO

FLY ANYWHERE FOR ONLY 10 POUND NO TAXES OR CHARGES

etc etc. Maybe it's an Irish thing, they are typing like they speak.

Sods Law! ... As soon as I'd paid a fiver each for my flights last Monday, Ryanair brought out a new £1 flight promotion, leaving me another £32 out of pocket!

However, I am now prearmed for the extortionate credit card/handling charge scam! ... I have this morning got myself a Visa Electron card from the Post Office, so A £1 flight should now cost me the princely sum of .... £1! ... We'll see!

I've applied for a basic Co-Op account for the same reason. What's the betting they turn out to be the "wrong type" of Electron card?

I note that the "free" Visa Electron" card payment is supposed to be for a limited period only! ... However, they have been saying that since last year ... http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs.php?sect=CHARGES

Sod's law again ... They are now doing free flights! ****, ****! I might as well have gone out last week and p****d that £72 up against a wall!

The "free" flights actually incur a 1p charge in fees/taxes. I haven't taken one through to checkout but I'll wager that the 1p still incurs the £4 "handling" fee!"

We'll see in the morning when I "activate" the Visa Electron card that I got today!

Don't feel too bad a free flight isn't really free as mentioned in my previous post.

Ain't that the truth, Jenn!!!!

Just booked 2 return flights for my boss from City of Derry airport (Northern Ireland) to Birmingham... going out on Friday 12 December and coming back on Sunday 14 December...

Online check-in
No insurance
No hold bags
Payment by my shiny, new Visa Electron card

TOTAL = 4 PENCE!!!! ... Yes, 4p.

As you all know by now, I am going the week before and paid £72 frigging quid, (which is also now 4p by the way!)

When I get home from work tonight I am gonna book me some flights (just to make me feel better) ... The only limitation is that there are no foreign flights from here, otherwise I really would have gone to town....

No... nothing else... just 4p all in!

Edit: Sorry Jenn, I should have mentioned that you need to select the flights that say "special offer" rather than "regular fare" next to the selection spot... these don't carry any taxes, whereas the regular fare ones do, even if they are £0.00.

Re: Ryan Air and Checking in

For anyone that's interested, Ryanair are doing another "Free Flight" promotion starting tomorrow (22nd Dec) and running until Christmas Eve, for flights in January and February. Thay are actually going to cost 1p (for legal reasons they cant be totally free) but if you play the game, you can definitely get them for that, as I did a few weeks ago.

1. There may be some other "free flights" which attract taxes, but you need to look for the ones that says "1p NO TAXES".

2. Be sure to travel light, as they charge about £24 per bag in the hold! ... Their free cabin luggage allowance is pretty generous at 10kg's and with bags/cases up to their max dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, you can certainly pack enough for 2/3 (4) days away as cabin luggage.

3. Make sure that you choose to "check-in online". This can be done from 5 days to up to 4 hours before departure and saves you paying them £5 per person per flight. It also means that you can go straight through to security without having to hang around the check-in desk.

4. Select the "No Insurance" option.

5. Be sure to pay by Visa Electron card. This is the only payment method that doesn't attract a £5 per person, per flight charge.

Do all the above, and you will get the flights for 1p.

Re: Ryan Air and Checking in

Don't want to start a whole new thread just for this one-off rant... but ... I have booked AER LINGUS return flights to go to Rome tomorrow for a couple of days, and was just availing of the "free" online check-in facility. It has just dawned on me that the "maximum 30 hour before flight rule" means that I cannot check-in for both flights now, only the outbound one. Meaning that for the homeward flight, I would need to make time on my already tight schedule, to find internet facilities to check in/print boarding passes again! No doubt costing the same amount as airport check-in, plus the inconvenience! What a load of bollix! ... Even Ryanair give you a 2 week window!

Rant over!

Re: Ryan Air and Checking in

I've another Ryanair check-in question. Since my last trip in September the web site now requires you to confirm online/airport check-in at the time of booking. It goes on to say that anyone forced to use airport check-in by reason of not having a passport or ID card can reclaim the fees.

Of course, being Ryanair it doesn't say how you reclaim. And as ever there's no telephone number or e-mail address to ask. I've faxed the flights refund number but they don't have a great rep for prompt replies.

Anyone successfully done this?

It has just dawned on me that the "maximum 30 hour before flight rule" means that I cannot check-in for both flights now, only the outbound one. Meaning that for the homeward flight, I would need to make time on my already tight schedule, to find internet facilities to check in/print boarding passes again! No doubt costing the same amount as airport check-in, plus the inconvenience! What a load of bollix! ... Even Ryanair give you a 2 week window!

Rant over!
It is a pain, I had to do the same myself last week. I'm sure the hotel will be able to print off your return boarding passes.

Re: Ryan Air and Checking in

Hey CFC, leave me your details & I'll do the return check-in for you & Fed Ex the boarding passes to your hotel!!

So let's see...

Question 1. Did you pack your own luggage?
No!
Question 2. Did anyone give you anything to carry for them?
They certainly did!

Yay, DJT fella! ... How's it going?

Now, after packing a small case that is marginally bigger than the maximum dimensions (by 1") ... I note that their cabin baggage weight allowance is only 6kg's ... whilst my bag weighs 10kg's! ... Do I risk it, and hope that they don't check, or pay the £8 on-line baggage check-in now?... (penalty is £15 if they suss me out tomorrow at airport ... plus cringeworthy embarassment factor)!

Re: Ryan Air and Checking in

If they stand to make an extra £15 out of you , expect to have to put your hand baggage in a box of the correct dimensions and to have to weigh it

Absolutely, JS ... that's what I'm thinking! The wife says I should risk it, but, TBH, for the sake of a few extra quid (the return flights Belfast to Rome were only £49 all in) I would be mortified if I were nabbed trying to do a sneaky one! ... I'm gonna pay up and not have that threat playing on my mind!
