How much to fit taps??

Just in the middle of fitting a kitchen and wanted a new sink put in.

My GF's brother said he would fit the taps for £75!!!

That's a bit steep isn't it? I mean essentially he is only gonna be there for a small amount of time.

He also said that he would fit a bathroom for £300! That sounds steep to me!

What do you think?

Cheers

Re: How much to fit taps??

£300 to fit a bathroom doesn't sound too bad - they are almost always more time consuming than you expect. But £75 to change two taps sounds a bit steep, especially considering he's your mrs' brother.

Having said that, I was asked to change two taps on a bath once and they were stuck on so tight I had to take out the bath because of the limited space and grind them off. By the time I'd gone backwards and forwards to get my grinder and other bits, most of the day was gone.

Just do it yourself spend what you save on beer to drink whilst you're doing it.

Re: How much to fit taps??

Depends how much work is in fitting the bathroom but if its a standard bathroom thats about the going rate.

As to the taps if you called a plumber out they would probably charge around the same sort of money so he ain't giving you mates rates.

Re: How much to fit taps??

Taps can be a bit fiddly seeing as you usually have to remove the old ones first. Not a difficult job by any means, but maybe an hours work?? Prices seems ok to me, but i'd have thought you'd got mates rates from him bringing the price down to a crate of beer or something

£300 to fit a bathroom also sounds very resonable

Sorry meant to say GF's friends brother!

I think I will have a go at fitting them myself!

£300 for fitting a bathroom suite! I think I'll become a plumber! That must surely only take a day when you know what your doing? £1500 a week?

things may be different now with the credit crunch but just before I had some work done and couldnt get any corgi reg plumber to get out of bed for under £400 a day, and i rang about 30 ...

so £1500 a week seams reasonable, £300 for a bathroom (depending on size etc) dont seam bad tbh

and it makes me laugh with all the TV adds say get into IT, now theres managed services, Indian call desks and 200k students a year with IT qualifications ....

I should have become a plumber, money for old rope tbh

Re: How much to fit taps??

When I was still living at home with my mum, she had a new suite put in and the plumber charged her just under £700 - no tiling or anything else, just the toilet, bath and sink - and that was almost 20 years ago.

Looks like she got ripped off.

Re: How much to fit taps??

Depends on the state of the current plumbing really.

If you get a plumber out of the phone book, depending where you live it'll be around £350+ just for a straight swap of bathroom appliances.

Though being a family friend you'd expect a bit more of a discount, but, it depends where you live to compare plumbing costs with other people there.

£75 for kitchen taps seems about right, Generally £60+ for kitchen taps.

Gotta remember plumbers are in demand, like electricians.

plus, you're also paying for his travel time - he can't do anything else whilst he's stuck in traffic - like the rest of us.

Re: How much to fit taps??

Lol its not always £300 a day ,what you have to remember there's not really any free quotes ,when i go out to quote and fanny around driving to the job ,preparing the quote ,dropping it off ,getting materials ,clearing the site ,paying for insurances ,corgi ,petrol ,tools etc ,etc .

That £300 quid soon disapears ,anyhow i swapped some sink taps ,basin taps ,and swapped a thermocouple on a a recent customers gas fire all for £160 ,£40 materials and the rest labour ,£120 for one half hrs work .

But, it all depends on the customer some people are looking to save a few quid ,and some want top class work doing without scrimping ,and some are clever clogs know it alls who buy **** gear from screwfix ,b and q and want you to go sort out there cock ups .

These days though i mainly give an estimate over the phone so as not to waste my time and petrol tramming around giving quotes for time wasters ,i ask the projected budget then tell them if i can do it for that ,whats the point in getting a load of quotes and wasting tradesmens time .

Although i do know a well established plumber in halifax who makes around £600 a day just fixing boilers .
works from 7am till 9pm .though .

Anyway i'm off out again at 5 to look at a bathroom suite with a mate who needs a hand .

Oh forgot there's also the frigging debt collecting services i have to employ for unscrupulous customers who think they can take the **** ,not a problem for a seven day letter or a seven foot wide mate though lol.
