Some career advice

I'm trying to get as many people's input as possible on this matter because I'm absolutely thrown.

Basically, I have just scored a 2:2 at university and was going to progress to study the GDL as a postgraduate degree with sponsorship from a law firm. The law firm made an error in their recruitment process and have now withdrawn the training contract, leaving me registered on a course which I am unable to finance without taking out a loan and which starts tomorrow (the law firm kindly let me know on Friday they'd be retracting the offer).

I am now considering doing the 1-year course over 2 years as a part-time course with either weekend or evening tuition. This would allow me to work full-time (or near enough) in order to finance the course but the issue I am having is whether or not it would look bad on my CV that I opted to do the GDL over two years as opposed to one.

Also of note is that I am presently living at home having moved back in after completing my undergraduate degree and, quite frankly, I'm fed up and want to move out. So I either move into Manchester for the 1-year GDL or else move out in Sheffield or Manchester for the 2-year part-time GDL. With rental and food prices being as they are, I'm worried that the graduate loan would barely cover the cost of the rent/eating for a year and I'd be forced to work part-time during the 1-year course anyway - not a favourable position.

My options are:

1) stay as I am with a 2:2 and enter the job market
2) take out a graduate loan and commence the 1-year GDL
3) enter the 2-year part-time GDL and begin working

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

Re: Some career advice

Hi there

Afraid you've lost me with all this Uni stuff i left school at sixteen with 3 o levels (remember them)

But if you were my son i would advise option 3 , assuming you can get a job that will allow you to study. As that seems the best option

And oh god have i got this ahead of me if Jamie goes to Uni

Good luck

The kind of training contract that's written down in black and white, and most probably signed too.... maybe you should sue them on account of their mistake, it'll be good practical experience for you

Haha, I doubt I could out-law a law firm. It's an option I'm looking at but it seems they've got bases covered in this regard. My brother (a lawyer at a different firm) seems to think it'd be hopeless following it up and instead I'm likely to take them to the Law Society as they've dropped the ball big time.

Good course of action, I doubt they will look on this favourably, provided it's within their jurisdiction (you aren't a customer of this solicitor)
