Scary event whilst surfing the web last night

I was on the o2.co.uk forums pages last night and on one of the threads as I scrolled down there was a cartoon character image holding a banner which told me my IP address ISP name browser name and OS of my pc... is that aimed at me I thought and came back to the page with a different browser... LO yes the browser name was changed on the banner
This frightened me as it seems I was not anonymous on the web which I thought with a firewall etc. I would be!!!

Errr no. ANY site you connect has all that information available. In their logs and etc. Even right now. I believe they use some PHP code, to display that info.

Re: Scary event whilst surfing the web last night

Try the Google Chrome with their new Anonymous "Window" and see if it does the same.

Re: Scary event whilst surfing the web last night

When you browse a website your browser sends info about your browser and sometimes OS to the website so that the website can make decisions on how to return the webpage to you. This is how, if you browse to, say, google.co.uk on your mobile phone you will get a version of the google page optimised for mobiles.

The website has to know your IP address to know where to return the info to.

From the IP address, your ISP can usually be worked out, the blocks of addresses used are public information.

If you use a router, the IP address will be of the router, it's only if you use a USB modem that the IP address will be that of your PC itself.

If you want to be more anonymous, I think there are services that do this for you. Or you could use a public proxy server, but these are very slow.

Modern forum software is now very sophicated. In addition to your IP address, browser and operating system this version of Vbulletin is the most advanced to date as it contains a forum cam.

If you look at the bottom left hand corner of each posts you will see a representation of a cam. When this turns green the cam is operational and I can see from the saved information on your post that it's about time you emptied that ashtray and chucked away the pile of empty cans.

Especially if it does so before you get married.

It's just a java trick, the banner isn't really communicating any information.

PS
The MODS can always view the IP of anyone posting, it's recorded in the post.
(but they can't see your IP if you are just browsing)
