Retracting your notice?

Can a company refuse to retract your notice if you are still serving your notice period? I ask because i may have been a little hasty (nothing else to go to yet) & i leave tomorrow (Friday). I am still in my probationary period so i know they can tell me to clear off anyway but i am curious about the notice retraction.

Re: Retracting your notice?

once you've confirmed resignation in writing, regardless of how long you've been employed, on a probation period etc etc or not, it's entirely up to them if they want to let you retract your notice or not. essentially they have confirmation of your resignation as evidence that termination of employment was the employees choice

once an employers received notice that someone wants to stop working for them, it's unlikely they would want to allow someone to retract it, as it's likely that after doing so the employee will probably change their mind and want to leave again. likewise with re-employing staff who left for whatever reason before, if they do it once they will probably do it again

Re: Retracting your notice?

I wouldn't recommend retracting it even if your allowed. You've shown to the company that your not happy and don't want to work for them anymore. There likely to not forget that.

Re: Retracting your notice?

I wouldn't retract it. Let's say they allow you, and taking into account you're still within your probationary period they may well leave it a week or two, and lay you off anyway.

Schoolboy error?

Any how - if you can survive without it would strongly suggest not going back - unless there is good reason, e.g. say you had a new job offer that was then refused.

Re: Retracting your notice?

I didn't think you had to give notice in your probabtionary period.

As far as I was aware you can leave without noitce and they can get rid of you likewise.

I'm sure someone will correct me though.

I personally wouldn't retract my notice, but then again I wouldn't have given one unless I had a "Plan B"

Re: Retracting your notice?

Just to contradict everyone else and confuse matters further - I was under the impression that you can retract right up to the point you are due to go. This is why the personnel department at my company says they cant plan too far ahead with succession planning (in case "they" don't go as "they" suggested they would).

notice on either party depends on what the terms and conditions of employment state, the probationary element has no effect under statutory law

notice period for employment of less than 30 days can be as little as a day however, and some employers may state that. the notice period should be the same length on both sides

that's not true, although individual company policy may allow people to retract resignations, they are under no obligation by law to allow it.
