In fairness it's not the Scottish residents fault that they are more pro-active than our docile government, instead of criticising perhaps we should applaud and then maybe just maybe we'll get the same system in our country.

Was this anything to do with Jamie Oliver's expose last year of the appalling state of school lunches under the present Government which had the effect of shaming them into doing something about it

One does wonder, if Jamie Oliver had said nothing, would all of this "healthy school dinners" appeared? I seriously doubt it. As IanJ says, the government has been shamed into doing something about it.

It could happen anyway, other Government's are just quicker to react than ours and don't have as much red tape around everything.

Re: Government doing something right but I dont suppose they'll get any praiser

I do applaud better food in schools, but it inevitably comes at an extra cost. We've seen at least 20% rises in our children's school meal fees since Jamie Olivers campaign and no doubt we will see further rises dependant on how far the new school meal rules go.

I don't mind taking the hit if the quality rises, however, I'm sure it will influence peoples decisions, especially as budgets are getting ever tighter. Sarnies v Dinners may sway to sarnies for a year or two

Re: Government doing something right but I dont suppose they'll get any praiser

I'm a little bothered about this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/828777.stm

Back in 2000 12 type 45 destroyers were going to be built:

The Type 45 destroyers are the first in a planned series of 12, and an order for a second batch is expected in 2004. Total cost of the project is estimated at £6bn.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/h...re/7464085.stm

Eight years on and the number was cut first to eight then to six.

Mr Ainsworth said there were not "unlimited resources" for the Navy but the fleet had "sufficient capability".

"The six destroyers already on contract will provide a formidable capability."

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle4641416.ece

From The Sunday TimesAugust 31, 2008

Navy forced to curb role as Gordon Brown imposes cutsMichael Smith
The government is planning further big cuts to the Royal Navy after deciding that terrorism is the only serious threat to Britain. Annual accounts from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) show that it is to cut funding for new ships and equipment by more than 20%, from about £1.8 billion a year to a maximum of £1.4 billion.

The cuts come as the MoD tries to fill a £2 billion shortfall in its budget over the next three years. Overspending has left funding even for this year uncertain. They will force the navy to shrink its commitments around the globe, further limiting Britain’s ability to play a role in world events at a time when the perceived threat from both Russia and China is increasing.

The Royal Navy has not sent any ships to join a Nato force in the Black Sea since the Georgia crisis began, in contrast to poorer countries such as Poland and Spain.

New carriers were ordered but what's going to escort them? I think the carriers were ordered to get a few votes as well.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7487675.stm

A £3.2bn deal which will secure more than 4,500 Scottish shipbuilding jobs has been hailed as "a dream come true" by unions.

Re: Government doing something right but I dont suppose they'll get any praiser

When my mother was in charge of a school kitchen many years ago they did provide healthy and nutritious meals. They could only have things like chips once a week and everything had to be balanced and approved by the local County Council. Then they started getting rid of the local school kitchens and farming out the provision of meals to 3rd party companies and things went downhill from then on.

Do Scottish people pay for anything?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7593400.stm

Car parking charges are to be abolished at NHS hospitals across Scotland, the health secretary has announced.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7323062.stm

The cost of NHS prescriptions in Scotland has been cut by almost £2.

The reduction, from £6.85 to £5, is the first of several price drops, which will result in free prescriptions for all in 2011.

Then there's tuition fees etc.

Is this get at Scotland day or something

You knew this was bound to happen as soon as they became devolved.

@ Sonic67 without quoting you, think you'd be better starting a new thread for this one.

This guy use to be a hippie in his youth who graduated from Oxbridge and who planned top travel for 5 years or so selling beads and trinkets to others of his ilk.Anyway it seems his family talked him out of it and his brother got him a job in the city where over the following years he became very successful. Like many a greedy muppet he made millions, so much so that when he was at the top he amassed a 3 million pound fortune. He then decided to quit sick as he was at the excesses he witnessed from his shallow, money obsessed self absorbed arrogant colleagues. His conscience continued to prick because he was brought up believing that "money is the root of all evil" by his family on of whom was a Labour peer.Of course there is an element of hypocrisy particularly as his father delighted in his sons success.Just shows no one is perfect , but having decided to blw the whistle I say good on yer Cityboy.Maybe he'll put his "earnings"to better use

c) The protection provided by statins is so smjall as not worth bothering with
d) they may have unpleasasnt side effects
Studies aso show that rather than improving ones health, cutting down on these fats may be harmful.
Countries with the highest sat fat consumption such as France,Finland and Belgium have the lowest death rates from heart dieases whilst others such as Ukraine Georgia and Croatia, which consume less fat ,have higher mortality rates from heart disease.
During the war and after meat consumption( other than fish) was at its lowest . In that time heart attacks doubled. In Japan since the war meat protein consumption doubled, their cholesterol levels doubled and yet their heart attack rates halved and strokes came down by seven times.
As for cholesterol, both lDL and HDL are vital for the body indeed the liver manufactures them just as it turns glucose into sat fats.
Anyway i am not making all this up but iI do wonder if we have been sold a pup and who should we now believe??

Another thing the real big killer is ---------------------stress. Or at least the inability to cope with it ie distress.Unhealthy stress produces cortisol( stress hormone)too much adreneline and insulin It is these hormones that do the damage.Revving up the fight /flight side of your nervous systmewill push up blood sugar levels, raise blood pressure and increase blood clotting agents.Soo bad work environments ,bullying etc are a no no ,major life traumas needs support and good friendship networks are a must .Plenty of physical activities lower alcohol comnsumption( )an optimistic outlook, watching one s team win meditation etc can all help
Goinng back to the Croatia / Ukraine scenario both have suffered great upheaval whereas France has had little. This may explain the "French paradox"
Anyway here is the link. I just want some opinions on it

You knew this was bound to happen as soon as they became devolved.

@ Sonic67 without quoting you, think you'd be better starting a new thread for this one.
It's revenge for you lot taxing us illegally when the council tax was introduced in Scotland first.

Sucks doesn't it

Not that I'm even ill or have any kids, why don't they remove the tax on beer and fags then I'd be happy

What he meant is, he doesn't read the pages that contain rubbish.

And he only buys it for the Suduko puzzle anyway....

But we'll need more social workers for the chimp parents who then try and stuff chips and crisps through the railings.

Re: Government doing something right but I dont suppose they'll get any praiser

The biggest problem is that it costs more to buy an apple than it does a chocolate bar. This is just plain wrong.

It's no wonder single mothers are having to buy cheaper junk food than more expensive healthy food, and who can blame them.

Either reduce the cost of fruit and veg to below that of junk food, or create a junk food tax that snickers, mars etc have to pay to sell in shops, making the price more expensive.

A Boots meal deal is almost £3. A McDonalds happy meal is £1.99!

Reverse the cost, reverse the problem!
