Was this anything to do with Jamie Oliver's expose last year of the appalling state of school lunches under the present Government which had the effect of shaming them into doing something about it

I seriously doubt it. As IanJ says, the government has been shamed into doing something about it.

I do applaud better food in schools, but it inevitably comes at an extra cost. We've seen at least 20% rises in our children's school meal fees since Jamie Olivers campaign and no doubt we will see further rises dependant on how far the new school meal rules go.
I don't mind taking the hit if the quality rises, however, I'm sure it will influence peoples decisions, especially as budgets are getting ever tighter. Sarnies v Dinners may sway to sarnies for a year or two |

I'm a little bothered about this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/828777.stm
Back in 2000 12 type 45 destroyers were going to be built: The Type 45 destroyers are the first in a planned series of 12, and an order for a second batch is expected in 2004. Total cost of the project is estimated at £6bn. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/h...re/7464085.stm
Eight years on and the number was cut first to eight then to six. Mr Ainsworth said there were not "unlimited resources" for the Navy but the fleet had "sufficient capability".
"The six destroyers already on contract will provide a formidable capability." http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle4641416.ece
From The Sunday TimesAugust 31, 2008 Navy forced to curb role as Gordon Brown imposes cutsMichael Smith
The government is planning further big cuts to the Royal Navy after deciding that terrorism is the only serious threat to Britain. Annual accounts from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) show that it is to cut funding for new ships and equipment by more than 20%, from about £1.8 billion a year to a maximum of £1.4 billion.
The cuts come as the MoD tries to fill a £2 billion shortfall in its budget over the next three years. Overspending has left funding even for this year uncertain. They will force the navy to shrink its commitments around the globe, further limiting Britain’s ability to play a role in world events at a time when the perceived threat from both Russia and China is increasing. The Royal Navy has not sent any ships to join a Nato force in the Black Sea since the Georgia crisis began, in contrast to poorer countries such as Poland and Spain.
New carriers were ordered but what's going to escort them? I think the carriers were ordered to get a few votes as well. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7487675.stm A £3.2bn deal which will secure more than 4,500 Scottish shipbuilding jobs has been hailed as "a dream come true" by unions.

When my mother was in charge of a school kitchen many years ago they did provide healthy and nutritious meals. They could only have things like chips once a week and everything had to be balanced and approved by the local County Council. Then they started getting rid of the local school kitchens and farming out the provision of meals to 3rd party companies and things went downhill from then on.
