Can I rig up mobile surveillance gear to catch bad guy?

Hi

I need an off the shelf solution to catching a thief. It has to be set up in my car and powered from the cigarette socket. Things are happening at about 3 or 4 in the morning so I'd like to be able to set the timer from then to about 6am. The distance to be filmed is between 200 and 500m (the only spot to park). It's light this time of year so IR is not required. I thought of some sort of HD recorder but Maplins' seem to be all mains powered except for a really expensive one. Budge is an issue but I thought I'd be able to put something together for a couple of hundred! I need it by Tuesday.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

There is a more suitable forum on here for this type of question. Perhaps get this moved there ?

Mains power isn't a problem with an inverter.

Home Automation, Lighting, Security, Heating & Cooling

There are some knowledgeable members & pro CCTV installers on there regularly.

Mike.
