Re: A vandal getting his comuppence...

A mate sent me this the other day.

You really shouldn't laugh as the poor boy was obviously seriously injured... possibly even losing the use of his right leg.

Bit harsh that one...he could have just been mucking around on a vacant plot like we all used to do as kids.

I think that there is a difference between the "mucking about" that we used to do as kids and the organized vandalism and destruction that many of the kids seem to go in for today. I think that much of this is due to the ability to record the event on a phone and places like YouTube where you can show off later as it encourages copycat behaviour.

That fence is there for a reason, someone paid good money for that. Shouldn't have done it. The result was very nasty though.

that could also be the reason we get to see things like this happening now, I doubt that is the first time something like that has happened to somebody just the first time its been caught on camera and put up on youtube for all to see.

Re: A vandal getting his comuppence...

Admittedly I don't have sound on this PC so can't tell if the kid is being malicious but my mate and I were on a demolished and disused site when we were younger just messing around and a wall fell on top of my friend and chopped both his feet off...not nice for a 12 year old to go through so I kind of have empathy, hence why I seem to be swimming against the tide on this one.

Agreed, there's nothing funny about this - there's a lesson there maybe, but to laugh at the guy is sick. Everyone who's been a child has done something this stupid at one time or another. Unfortunately for this guy, (a) he got hurt and (b) it was captured on camera.

It isn't nice to laugh at other peoples misfortune. And you shouldn't mock the afflicted...

And neither of those things occured to me until I read some of the replies here!

No need to be so glib about it, I wasn't defending him. I said it might have been a stupid thing to do, but to laugh at his misfortune is cruel.

If he was hurt, and it looks pretty likely, why did his 'mate' still post the clip on Youtube? That is the really cruel thing here.

Re: A vandal getting his comuppence...

I'm in two minds about this .

On one hand the he shouldn't have been kicking the fence - as mentioned its there for a reason and the reason isn't for some chav to come along and destroy it.
In that respect he got what he deserved - had he been caught doing this he would have got off with a slapped wrist and told not to do it again.
So looking at him as a yob / vandal I laughed but ...

On the other hand Kids are silly and do things without thinking - We all did it when we were young and foolish -if you deny this then you are kidding yourself.

So in that respect if he was just being silly that punishment was a little harsh.
I imagined what if that were my son - and he was hurt just for being a little silly - how would I feel.
I acknowledge he would have done wrong but maybe required a punishment not as severe as given to the kid in the clip.

My son is 6 and on occassion has been very silly - we have bought him up with discipline and on the whole he is good but boys will be boys and become silly.

He was playing in the back garden with a toy sword pretending to be a pirate and started to hit the bushes and trees - he then for some reason started to hit a bird bath we have (made of stone) and kept hacking away at it - he then proceeded to kick it and knock it over - it fell over and broke.

When asked why he did what he did he said I was playing - now if others had seen him they would have assumed he was a vandal and said he deserved it to fall on him etc.
I was cross but not enough to see him hurt.

So I can see both sides of the argument here

Not sure what my point is exactly - thought i'd share anyway

Difference is your kid is 6. That prat was at least 14/15 and knows what he is doing. Had to laugh at the idiot.

Re: A vandal getting his comuppence...

Sure I can understand that but I guess my point was - no one wants to see their kids hurt irrespective of how silly they are.
Dont get me wrong I laughed too - what he did was wrong- but because he was being a vandal or because he was being silly with his friends after watching the karate kid ?

I guess at that age they should know better though - at least he won't do it again

Best lessons - from the school of life!

As I see it, its a totally different scenario, your lad was playing and got carried away, whereas the idiot on the video was committing wanton vandalism.
For sure he will not be doing the same thing again, hopefully nor will his mate(s) that videoed the 'fun.'
