Recommend a PC vendor for a budget system

I need a basic base unit.

The hard drive does not have to be that big. I want a dual core processor (any brand) and 1 or 2 GB of RAM. Tower unit preferably.

All others factors are secondary.

I don't want to spend over £250 and want new rather than refurbished.

Recommendations please.

Thanks,

XoD.

Re: Recommend a PC vendor for a budget system

Dell's Outlet is probably as good a place to start as any.

Re: Recommend a PC vendor for a budget system

I'd concur: I bought a Dell Inspiron 531 processor unit last year for around that sort of money, and it's been as good as gold apart from the dreaded Vista. My previous unit was from Evesham, who might be worth trying, but it was hellish noisy, something that doesn't show up in the specs and was a bit of a disappointment.

Re: Recommend a PC vendor for a budget system

Keep an eye on HotUKDeals website, quite often some good Dell deals. I think someone at work bought a base for 150 recently.

Any good ?
Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core E2180 Processor (2.00GHz,800MHz,1MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium with Service Pack 1, 32-bit - English
17in E178WFP WIDESCREEN UK/Irish Black (1440 x 900) TCO99

48x CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
Dell™ Entry Quietkey USB Keyboard - UK/Irish (QWERTY)
Dell 2 Button USB Optical Mouse

Subtotal £179.00 Ex. VAT & Shipping
But look out for codes etc to get free shipping and possibly more off.

Alternatively build your own from the classifieds on this site. If it's just web browsing and general office applications an old P4 or socket 939 AMD will do you fine, I've often seen motherboard/cpu bundles being sold as people upgrade.

Re: Recommend a PC vendor for a budget system

I've just realized you said not refurbished, try Ebuyer, I'm not sure you'll get a new one for £250 with 1gb of ram and dual core.

Re: Recommend a PC vendor for a budget system

after years of building my own for myself and friends, the last few pc's i've bought for myself or friends have all been dell's. the trick is to check the bargain/deal websites and look out for the best offers. i've never found the outlet side of dell to have better deals than the normal side

getting a box without monitor isn't as easy to get, but it is possible. you need to wait until they offer free shipping and you can configure without monitor and remove the extended warranty type stuff and you can get boxes for sub £200. as for dual core exactly, that's something that's never bothered me, but i'm sure with a budget of £250 you should be able to get one easily

sometimes it's cheaper to upgrade parts like HD and ram seperately. i got a dell laptop for £345 the other week and they wanted £45+vat to upgrade from 1gig(2x500mb) to 2gig ram, but i got a 2gig stick from play for £22 (with £2 off voucher), i had to remove one 500mb stick, but now i got 2.5gig for less than half the price of dells upgrade. they are usually pretty expensive on HD upgrades. i also managed to get XP, which runs faster than vista on a lower spec machine

dell normally update offers on thursdays so see whats available then

http://ecomm.euro.dell.com/dellstore...1-e33fb98369a2

i'm not sure if that link will work, but that's a quickly configured box for £172 inc delivery and vat etc - it's £96 exc vat, but with £60 delivery and vat it's £172, and it's dual core

Gentelmen, you are both right. I spent a little more time digging around on the Dell site and dumping the aspects I didn't want, so came up with a suitable solution.

Thank you.

You may need to add a bit for an OS but they can all do a base unit for under £250.

http://www.aria.co.uk/Systems/Specia...roductId=31455 - they have a few others too, plus their super specials turns up some good stuff - oh and if you really trawl their site (and ebuyer's for that matter) you can find some cracking bargains with stock level of 1 or 2 left, like my brother's brand new dell laptop that I got for £250 last year.
