£96 last weekend... admittedly it has a 70-75L tank! But still it hurt! Not too long now until it breaks the £100 mark

Ouch!

I paid at 130.9 for a litre of diesel, the garage down the road had it at 134.9. Luckily it lasts me about 2 weeks as I have got into the habit of rolling everywhere that I can, that gets me 53mpg on average in a Laguna Tourer 1.9D.

Re: I have just filled my car up

Just looking at my receipt I got 58.81 litres @ £1.35 giving a grand total of £79.40.

I have a 2.0D and average about 43mpg due to the type of driving I have to do...country roads, up mountains etc (my job). I do anywhere between 700 and 1000 miles a week.

Really looking forward to it breaking £100 a fill (£1.69 / litre)
I wonder will we hit that figure before the end of the year?

When I first had my car in 04 it tended to cost a little over £40. Last time I filled it was £64.15.

Re: I have just filled my car up

My Passat Estate takes over £80 if the light is on. The worse thing is that at Asda's self service pumps they only let you draw £70, so I have to put a different card in for the last £10 or so which probably annoys the person waiting behind me as they think I've finished, then I lift the pump again. I claim back the mileage at 13p/mile (the rates have only just gone up) so it's in my interest to eek as much out of a tank as possible othewise I'm paying to drive for my company. 'Free' fuel cards aren't worth having for me as the extra tax (£80 permonth IIRC) wouldn't be worth it for me as I do so little private mileage....I even manage all my DIY/AV shopping trips on route to different jobs. Just been shopping for a new HD camcorder while I'm in Guernsey today/tomorrow, but the web seems better value. At least I didn't drive here and the hire car has a full tank already that I'll never use up on these little roads!

Looking forward to the mini-cab prices going up too - it's been the best part of £3 a mile around my way for years - it'll be £5 soon.

Re: I have just filled my car up

I guess I'm lucky in that it only costs me approx £40 to fill up my small engine

I don't use the car much for pleasure, mostly work, and as a casual car user can claim back 45p a mile so it's not too bad really.

£70 to fill the Alfa GTV up.

Last tank full only lasted for 260miles though due to a faulty MAF sensor

Put £88 in the car yesterday, then had to fill up the bike on the way to work this morning.. £19 something, which doesnt sound much but considering its only 16 litres from the reserve light its a bit pants!

You live on the NI/RoI border in Newry, right? So why are you filling up in NI when you can drive across the border and get your fuel about 20-25p a litre cheaper?

Normally I do fill up in the south, but I was giving an example from my most recent purchase yesterday.
Since I was in Newtownards at the time, my reserve tank wouldn't get me to a petrol station in the South.

Also, considering that it's a 30 mile round trip to my nearest ROI station, and with the euro not nearly as good as it was, and with Louth having the most expensive diesel costs in Ireland, I wouldn't save much by making a dedicated trip to fill up.

Thanks for the tip though.

Re: I have just filled my car up

I've had my 1.9TDI Passat for about eighteen months now. When I first got it, £60 would fill the tank and do me for about 600 miles ... went yesterday and it cost £82.51 131.9p per litre at the local Morrison's.

Dony, I live about 35 miles from Derry City, but it used to be well worth my while driving just over the border to Bridgend (Republic) to fill up! Hadn't been over for a while, but I was in Derry doing a bit of shopping on Sunday and decided to get a fill ... anyway, I put in 55.8 litres, costing 73 euros... When I got home home, I checked the price of diesel in my local garage, redid the calculations back to sterling ... and I saved myself ... wait for it ... £6.60!

£62 .

I'll soon be putting diesel into the tank that's worth more than the car.

It's 30 miles from Newry to the nearest station in the RoI? That's news to me.

And you said you drove 700-1000 miles in a week which presumably means you spend a lot of time in the RoI so you're typically in a position to save 20-25p per litre most of the time you fill up.

But still, it's nice to grumble about UK prices anyway, eh. Even when most of the time you aren't paying them

EDIT: Saw it's a round trip. So just a 15 mile journey then. Still seems high and since you're travelling all the time you are in a position to fill up most of the time in the RoI at lower prices.

I don't doubt it....

Only a few years ago you could save £25 on a fill in the South but not now.

I think Gavan's post referred back to another thread when I was complaining about fuel costs and his advice to me was to close my business and find a new job. Good of him to offer me cost saving advice though.

On diesel you'll typically save 20-25p per litre, petrol a little less.

There is significantly less fuel duty in the RoI so the price diffrential is always going to be there. The problem is that as the absolute cost per litre rises, you have to take into account the amount of fuel it takes to get there and back.

Work out the number of litres it takes to get there and back. Work out how much that will cost you. Work out the savings per litre and then see how many litres you need to buy before you save money.

£6.60 on a fill is pretty decent if you're filling a couple of times a month.

As far as I can tell, drivers in the RoI are equally as much up in arms at the recent rises in fuel as those paying UK prices. So the notion that cutting fuel duty is some sort of solution doesn't really hold water.

I don't live in Newry town centre, in fact I'm 7 mile north of Newry (though still within the Newry postcode).

As a UK citizen who pays UK taxes I'm perfectly entitled to grumble about rising fuel costs.

As I said in an reply to you, I normally do fill my car in the South, but my wife's car is almost always fueled locally.

Only a few years ago you could save £25 on a fill in the South but not now.

I think Gavan's post referred back to another thread when I was complaining about fuel costs and his advice to me was to close my business and find a new job. Good of him to offer me cost saving advice though.

I thought it was pretty disingenuous of you to be crying for cuts in UK duty when I saw your location and noticed that you could simply fill up in the RoI and save 20p a litre or more anyway. But a good whine is nice, eh?

You can certainly complain about the rates of UK duty but since you were playing the martyr at having to pay such high UK prices whilst in fact filling up most of the time at 20-25p less than that it comes across as play-acting.
