Writing to a bank

Quick question about formatting.

I address the actual letter as "Dear Sir/Madam", don't I? Do I address the envelope "To The Manager" at my local branch?

Thanks!

Re: Writing to a bank

it's personal preference really. as long as it's polite and they know who it's to go to the end result will be the same

i was taught if you didn't know otherwise, then you always put dear sir, and never dear sir/madam

you can address the letter as such

The Manager
Bank of Whatever
1 Long Street
etc

if you phone the bank first you can ask for the name of the manager and address it more personally, and it shows you know a little more than addresssing to a random person you don't know

Re: Writing to a bank

Thanks for that unique. I can't promise the content of the letter will be quite so polite as the greeting but, hey, that's their fault not mine!

Re: Writing to a bank

If you start with Dear Sir you should end with Yours faithfully (lower case 'f'). If you know their name then end with Yours sincerely.

You could always try Neil's approach from the young ones...
