Thanks: Gave 190, Got 190 | Alternative to lead flashing on a roof as some theving git has nicked all mine
As title...
Some thieving little scum-sucking piece of pondlife has nicked most of the lead from my office roof.
I know that if I replace it the same parasites will just nick it again.
Can any of you builders/tradesmen out their recommend any alternatives that I can go to the insurance company with?

Am thinking I'll give our local scrap yard a call and ask how much they'll give us for it and then get the whole roof done in this other stuff and be done with it. Might even pay for itself
EDIT: spoke with a local scrapper and he reckons around £10 a metre. I reckon we have a good 20-30 metres still left up top.

Black Jack Bitumen Flashing come in 10M rolls with an aluminium face to give the appearance of lead.
| So the chances are that the thieving scum will try to nick that too! |

thanks guys
Just had some roofers in and the general consensus is that ridge tiles will be the best longevity/non-nickability option.
Plod still haven't turned up yet

There was a vicar on the radio the other day who's had his church's lead nicked umpteen times, and he mentioned a couple of substitutes, plus some spray on dye-type stuff that turns the thieves hands blue. Might be worth contacting the Church. Dunno who though - I doubt the Archbishop of Canterbury will be any help.
He said that the price of lead has gone through the roof (arf) because of high demand in China.

Dave | When i was a surveyor i was on site when this irate mother came in f'in and blindin whilst dragin her blue son along demanding money for new clothes etc
after pointing out that the paint was 12 foot up ontop of the store cupboard where last night a grands worth of lead had been nicked she turned to her son and knocked him 5 foot sideways. It was a joy to watch lol

Useless nobheads | They won't. Nicking lead off roofs is par for the course - when prices rise enough. All the lead was pinched from the churches when I lived in Kingston - back in the mid 70's. The cops did jack back then as well.........
Same as copper. At the moment, in Birkenhead, some no-brainers are pinching the pieces of copper from the gas boxes outside peoples houses! All it takes is one of these jerk offs to cut one wrong and - bang! I don't give a monkeys about them, but some poor buggers house is going to get totalled.
You have to ask yourself, who is worse? The builders and outlets who know damn well this gear is pinched or the tea leaves themselves? If there's no market, the thieving stops. Simple as really. One of the builders who was working at our house managed to get a drill that had been pinched off him back. But only because he'd had the sense to mark it. The guy in the shop (in which he recognised it) tried to make out a 'legitimate' seller had passed it to him.Yeah right...........
Chris, use the substitute, but do put on the dye as well. We used vandal proof paint to keep the 'erberts off our back roof. Be aware though, you have to put a warning sign up if you use it.

The people who accept the stolen goods should be more severely delt with. Should they refuse to accept the 'scrap' metal? But to be honest It'll just get passed around abit until it makes its way to a scrapyard.
There has just been a large amount of new lead stolen from a hisotic public building in my county. The police did turn up though!
As for alternatives, I wonder what building conservation officers have to say about them. Wouldn't be supprised if they refused to allow it.

Honest people can prove where there stuff comes from surely. I know I can...

If we want to change the finish we're supposed to apply for planning... which could take 6-8 weeks.
I told him that would be fine if he was happy to pay for any additional repairs to the building should we be faced with rain pissing through the roof... or if we replaced the lead, to pay for it to be done again when it's nicked the following week
They'll be back to me later (supposedly)
