Which song 'always' leaves a lump in your throat

Funny sometimes how that same song can get you all thoughtful and leave that lump in the back of your throat.

Its normally through a very personal event or relationship, these songs get imprinted in your brain.

Mine seems to be Paul Weller's - You do something to me. Just memories of young romance etc etc.

So what songs do it for you guys and girls?

Re: Which song 'always' leaves a lump in your throat

an innocent man, Billy Joel........ was playing when I found out my dad had cancer.......died 3 months after diagnosis aged 52, I miss him, been gone 4 yrs now.... It brings a tear to my whenever I hear it, fortunately I don't hear it that much on the radio......

I feel he was an innocent man as he was very well liked where he worked and also where he socialised, never harmed anyone and always helped everyone, proved so at his funeral...... close on 700 people attended the chuch!!

This song took on a whole new meaning to me after watching the BBC drama "recovery"

Apparently it is repeated shortly - don't miss it!

That would be Jeff Buckley. ... Hallelujah.

Many other song in various circumstances have the same effect, but this one does it every time.

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt (originally by Nine Inch Nails) is very poignant.

Re: Which song 'always' leaves a lump in your throat

Cheesy as it may sound I can't listen to Living years by mike and the mechanics without almost welling up.

My dad died of a heart attack without any warning one day when he was on his own. I heard this song on the radio a matter of weeks later and the words completely cracked me up. I still get really affected by it and I have been without my dad for nearly 14 years now.

One of the verses in the song is basically about losing your father and wishing you could have another opportunity to speak to him. sounds cheesy but it is how I feel sometimes.

Re: Which song 'always' leaves a lump in your throat

Three stand out for me.

Janet Jackson - Together Again. It was played at a close friends sister's funeral, (died of leukemia at 21) and at the funeral of a close friend of my fiancee (died of a heart attack due to hypertension at 26 - scared that his boyfriend was going to bash him).

Also Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun and Bright Eyes from Watership Down.

I can sympathize with that one. Virtually the same situation with myself. Since my Dad died last August I can hardly bear to listen to some songs, in particular Frank Sinatra (and I was a huge fan of Sinatra believe it or not, even though my job see's me playing chart and dance for hours on end...) Even my wife gets upset when she hears Francis.

The two that get me are...

Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles. Playing on the radio when my lovely little girl was born. A long long labour - we had a radio in our little room and listened to it all night. As morning broke the song came on and out she popped.

Rufus Wainwright - Rules & Regulations. No idea why, but reminds me of my little lad who's two now. Certain parts of the song make me think of him toddling around.

I've always said that music is very psychological. It can take you to times long forgotten quite easily....

I agree an amazing track. If you like that one you should listen to "If you could read my mind" from a hundred higways vol5.

Heard the track on the radio one day and stopped on the way home to buy the album.
