Just been blackmailed into doing a shift i didnt want to do any ideas what to do?

Hi,

i work in security, and i got to work at 6pm. About 7pm my supervisor called and said could i work on the warship i said no sorry im already at RSCT (differant site). So she caught me the other day on my laptop surfing the net and never said put it away or anything but when i said no to doing the shift she said "im sure frank (my boss) would like to know about you playing on your laptop" so i agreed to do this shift as i didnt want to risk my job.

im sat in the freezing cold on some old navy boat i cant shut the door and get the room warm because i have to keep a eye out to ID crew members coming onto the ship.

Nationwide Site Security is the firm i work for by the way.

is there anything i can do about this or is it just a "tuff" situation and i should get on with it.

it is currently -2 degrees in Liverpool so you can immagine how cold i am as i only come prepared to sit in a small office waching a carpark.

If your boss is really that strict, just tell her to do one, and claim you was on a break.

What you are experiencing is called 'life'. We all manipulate situations to a certain extent, whether its at work or at home. You were caught doing something that was clearly wrong (otherwise you wouldn't have done the shift) so the only advice is next time, be more careful where you surf

sounds like you are already doing the shift but you could be asked again in future. it would depend on what your contract says as to what you can do about it, likewise the situation with the laptop. if you aren't supposed to use the laptop whilst on duty you probably got off lightly. i'd imagine you would still be asked to work the shift regardless of the situation with the laptop, so it would depend on what your contract said regarding overtime and covering shifts. you could speak to a union rep for more advice

Just say you have 'Cold Stress' and take 2 weeks off

Quote:
Too much cold can mean chilblains, Reynaud’s disease, white finger, or frost bite. The body keeps the blood supply to the extremities closed at lower temperature to conserve heat. Cold conditions can also lead to fatigue since the body uses energy to keep warm. There is an increased risk of accidents due to numb fingers, obstruction by protective clothing, and slipping on ice, etc. Extreme cold for long periods can lead to hypothermia, loss of consciousness, and eventually comma. If the body temperature drops below 18C/64F, the heart beat stops.

Always agree to do any extra shift the bosses want (shows willingness)
Always call in sick the next shift (they get the hint really quickly)

Time for a new job? And if the boss has 'blackmailed' you once, she will do it again.

You could say it's quits now you have done that shift and refuse to do any extras and if challenged just say tell my boss then, call their bluff, if your a good worker with an already clean sheet then you'll be fine.

Is the correct answer. Yes you might need the job, but your own integrity is worth more than this. Contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of jobs out there.
