Is this an internet scam?

The other day I purchased something online from a reputable high street store. It was the proper site with secure payment. After I ordered the item a pop-up appeared from the Halifax. I had just used a Halifax Mastercard to buy the item. It was titled 'Halifax Secure' and basically I had to enter my card number and email address, DOB to register the card to prevent unauthorised use of the card.

I didn't enter anything and closed the box. I have checked on the Halifax website and they do offer this facility, but it seems odd they should use a pop-up for something so important.

Anyone else seen or used this facility?

Re: Is this an internet scam?

ive had a similar thing whilst paying with my abbey visa card via worldpay

although, it did not pop up (i use a blocker) it redirected my browser to it

i just tapped my details in and never really thought about it, how about asking the retailer just to be sure?

Re: Is this an internet scam?

a pop-up does seem dodgey as according on the forums a couple threads down amazon was hijacked and kept leading them to ads so maybe the site you were on was hijacked just as well you kept cautious and didnt enter your details but if they possible scammers have the resource to hijack sites there going to do some reasearch and make sure theyre pretending to provide a service that exists the main thing is that you didnt enter your details and if youre worried about not havin the service just go on the halifax site and sign up or whatever

Re: Is this an internet scam?

its not a scam its something that Halifax introduced a year or two ago for its debit cards when making online payments; Nationwide have also introduced something similar ... I believe they're also applying them to credit cards

I have accounts with both and have used both those things for online payments (usually paying my AMEX bill online at the AMEX website), its just a further password I have to enter before payment is confirmed

Maybe it was a genuine pop-up then. I'm funny about giving personal info out when I haven't asked for something, especially when you read about the number of scams about. The facililty looks like a good idea but I will go via the Halifax website and set it up.

Personally I think they are stupid expecting people to sign up via a pop-up window when all the advice given is to not give card details out unless you can verify who you are giving them to !!!

my thoughts exactly if youre not missing out on a oppurtunity of a life time why take the risk when you can go to the trusted web site and do the exact same thing there im sure youre not going to beat your self up wishing you filled in youre details on the pop-up.

I can't believe a big bank would advertise this service via a pop-up though, not good business practice if you ask me !!

I didn't and wouldn't give my name, creditcard details, DOB and email address out via a pop-up anyway. I thought it was a scam but it appears its not. All I'm saying is it doesn't seem good business practice for banks to advertise this way, especially when we are in an era where internet fraud is massive and on the increase.

It's not hard for scammers to duplicate this sort of pop-up so even if the bank said they do advertise this service that way, you still wouldn't know if it was genuine or not !!!!

Re: Is this an internet scam?

Next time read it Not every popup will steal your details.

Its a feature that all banks / sites will now use when processing card payments. You have 3+ opt outs before you need to register your card with your bank. This has been working for a while now I am amazed this is the first time you have used it.

Its an extra layer plus another password to remember.

They would have to be very good or you just silly. Card payments have a very small window to be processed. This method is hard code and done via the payment process that the website would do as standard inside the SSL part. In order to pass you have to be approved via the bank security team.

The only way this would go wrong would be a user clicking on a big button named give your details away.

Your missing my point. I now know this service is a genuine one. My point is banks are foreever warning people not to click on links in emails where people ask for bank details because they could be fraudulent yet the banks are asking people to do the exact same thing via a pop-up !!!!
