Can anyone reccomend any decent hotels in Amsterdam?Im going to watch Portishead there in a couple of months and dont fancy slumming it in some flea pit hostel but also dont really want to fork out a fortune for some luxurious place-something decent that wont break the bank is what im after. |

I have been to Amsterdam 16 times now (twice a year). I can recomend the following -
Residence le Coin - Apartment rooms with a separate attached kitchen and bathroom. Room sizes of 30x40 foot exe kitchen area. 4 star (excellent value for money)
Crown plaza City Central - Large rooms with 24 hour room service 5 star (should find a few deals where you get a free night)
The Jolly Carlton is ok but the room sizes are small and The Golden Tulip which is near to the Crown plaza is also a good hotel.
Have fun and don't forget to visit the coffee shops.

The Le Coin is just like a hotel but your rooms are much bigger and have the bonus of a small cooking area. You cant get room service here but there are loads of restaurant's around to try out. Rosa's Cantina is one of them (2 mins walk), some of the nicest Mexican food I have tried and one place I always visit when I am in the Dam. Also dont forget to pop into Gaucho's when your in the Dam. Best steak house around.

I used to work in Amsterdam a few days every month
- always stayed at Swissôtel bang in the city centre on Damrak ( www.swissotel.com/amsterdam)
Pretty good hotel - although I never paid for it, I don't think it was that pricey

The Schiller on Rembrandtplein at the far end of Rokin is really nice.
Last time I was there I checked in and was told the Hotel is quiet over the next day or so and I got upgraded to the biggest suite in the hotel for free!!
I couldn't believe it!
Great restuarant and bar
Big recommendation for Gauchos.
However, there is an amazing restaurant on The Spui (not out of the way). http://http://www.haesjeclaes.nl/
Very, very good, can't recommend it enough!
If you go there you must visit the tiny little Sinatra/Muppets bar on the other side of the road - it's great

Even some of the cheap places are OK. We stopped in a very cheap place during Euro2000 and it was fine. Bear in mind you don't spend much time at all in your room when in Amsterdam !
