Anyone got non-matching DECT phones to co-operate?

I have acquired a BT Freelance XD 1000 DECT additional handset on a sale. I hoped to use it along with our set of three BT Freestyle 4100s; they're all 'compatible' DECT GAP phones aren't they? I have the user guides for both but can't get the 4100 base to register the new XD handset. It doesn't even get to a point where it asks for the base unit's PIN no.

I am hoping someone here has actually got this to happen or can point me to a more appropriate forum.

TIA

Wouldn't this be an undesirable feature? Couldn't people start hacking phones to listen into other peoples conversations?

No more than they could if they had the identical handset. The handsets have to be registered with the base (although I suspect some "sets" come pre-registered to avoid consumer confusion). GAP ought to ensure interoperability of such basic functions, so I can't shed any light on the OP's failure, assuming he's read the manuals correctly.

Although, according to Wikipedia:

However some manufactures lock their systems so that they will not interoperate or provide bases that cannot register new handsets.
That would be annoying and stupid. So it's probably what has happened in this case!

Re: Anyone got non-matching DECT phones to co-operate?

We had some DECT Philips handsets that wouldn't co-operate so bought some new Onetel ones (different models) that were happy to accept each other, so I think it varies, do both manuals suggest that you can register new handsets?

Re: Anyone got non-matching DECT phones to co-operate?

Had to do this just a few days ago, just followed the instructions - unregister the phones first if they came with a base station then put your existing base station into register mode and then set your new phones to search for a base station

Re: Anyone got non-matching DECT phones to co-operate?

I've had a pair of Philips Dect phones for a few years.

A couple of weeks back I got a pair of BT dect phones FOC as a gift from BT for moving my calls back to them, they registered straight away with tthe Philips ones.

Usually, as above, BT to Phillips and combinations of the same work ok, with a few exceptions.

Re: Anyone got non-matching DECT phones to co-operate?

I couldn't get philips and philips to work together, but i have managed it fine with panasonic (and as a bonus people were no longer whispering down the phone )

Re: Anyone got non-matching DECT phones to co-operate?

I have with Panasonic and Panasonic. I think the most important step is unregistering the phone from it's original base station before attempting registering it with the new one.
