NYC hails Muslim 'Good Samaritan'

There has been a lot of bad press relating to Islam and Muslims over the last year, which imho has stirred up a lot of bad feeling towards this particular group, even though it is the minority that are responsible for the headlines.

Just browsing the BBC website and in "Also in the news" section was this particular article.

I just thought that I would post it for people to see, I don't know if it will change anyone's perception of the millions of ordinary people who practice Islam but it's nice to see Islam portrayed in a positive light for once.

Please, Please, please let's not start any arguments in this thread. I only posted it as I know there are Muslims that frequent this board and they may have missed it on the BBC website.

I also read this Braiden. I think people would be surprised at how often these things happen. It's the same old issue of the media concentrating on the bad rather than good most of the time.

I thought that the Good Samaritan was a parable by Jesus, so is the phrase appropriate?

Considering Jesus is mentioned more times in the Qur'an than the Bible, I'd say so.

Whilst it makes me happy that the guy stepped in it also saddens me that the biggest selling point for this story were the religions of the people involved-almost as though the news makers and politicians pointed out to us with big wax crayon lettering that "different religions can get along"...

I agree with Decadence, found the story (and indeed this thread) a bit patronizing.

Imagine the same story, but replace religion with race.

i guess its important, after all that is one of the problems of this war'ing world, if it makes one difference, then its worth it.

To me though that's kind of the point. Especially with all the stuff that's going on between Israel and Palestine.

"People often forget that Judaism and Islam aren't so far apart as the radicals from both sides would have us believe. We are both Abrahamic religions and in many respects share a common faith."

If it can show people that it's only the nutters that spoil it for Islam or any other religion for that fact and highlight the similarities rather than the differences between religions, then IMHO that can only be a good thing.

What amazes me about this story is that one part of the media has actually covered it as all they seem to want to force feed us these days are stories of death, destruction, disaster or war

I've never doubted that the majority of people of any religious persuasion are good people, but it's the media who are poisoning everyone's mind with these ideas of a certain religion being patronised wholly by extremists.
