I keep getting calls at work from a company called MCS (Millenium Computer Systems) who insist every time in their sales patter that they have just won the premiership contract to supply them with toners and as such they are offering free t-shirts from them as a thank-you for doing a survey.

Now, I don't believe it for a second and I have never done a survey. I must of had then 5 times and I am now rude to them but one got through my net and went to our accounts department.....now, he has agreed to a t-shirt. He made them promise that no "Free" toner will be sent as well and there is no catch.....

So.....whats the catch ?

This rings a bell with me from a couple of years ago. I cant remember details so cant be much use but I get the feeling there was a scam involved somewhere. Even the toner thing is the same story!

Sorry not much help.

Yeah, could be a "Gift-Horse Scam" as they call it. Sends toners we didn't order and blame it on the guy who received the free t-shirts in case he doesn't like to admit to receiving them.

We'll keep an eye on it. Would love to catch them at it and report them !

How about if you paid their invoice a penny at a time from your own (free) bank account?

I hd this at my work, I never said yes to the gift but they sent the bloddy things anyway, was feeeling terrible as my Boss had to get the company brief involved to tell them to fook off.

the last time a company sent me something at work which was unwanted i called them and asked them to send me a letter to confirm i didn't order the goods and they won't send any further goods, along with a credit note to confirm the invoice was cancelled, and not to make contact with anyone in our company ever again

they asked for the item to be sent back, but i told them that i wasn't going to waste my time packing/wrapping the item and posting it, and they had sent it by courier so if they wanted to pick it up they could send a courier to wrap/pack it and take it away, but the courier had to contact me first to make an appointment to turn up at my convenience

i never heard of the company again, no more goods, and they didn't pick up the item they sent. i put nothing in writing to them so that had absolutely no evidence of any order taking place

if they send something unsolicited like this they don't have much to stand on legally if you take a similar stance. unfortunately it's a numbers game and as long as a certain percentage of people fall for it they make money. they send you something on a free 30 day trial approval and hope you forget or don't bother sending it back, and you can then be tied into a years contract

i'm trying to think what i told the "charity diary" scam people as they were similarly told in no uncertain terms to jog on. thats the one where they claim you placed a £1000 ad in a diary thats supposed to raise funds for a local school/hospital/etc. usually when someone tells me that order confirmations are taken verbally i tell them to play back the message and confirm to me exactly what was said, and they usually then tell you they don't have it recorded so then you know you are off the hook as they have no evidence

Well, I work for a large law firm which specialises in fraud so that might help :rotfl:

is it your firm that sends me these law books on 30 day trial that i never ask for? :D
