Train fare increases

From Jan 2008, my weekly train ticket from Rochester to London, will increase from £62.40 to £68.50

This does not include any tube travel.

How much is your increase going to be?

Let the grumbling begin!

Re: Train fare increases

My season ticket is going up from £1920 to £2008. 4% or thereabouts, so not completely outrageous.

As my train is almost always on time, both departure and arrival, I cant moan too much

Driving the same route, with petrol, C Charge and parking costs me £40 a day, so I dont get much choice!

The fact that your car does 9mpg might be a contributary factor .

My tube ticket was renewed in September and was £1592 which was the same as the year before. Weekly tank of diesel is up from £38 odd to £41-2 odd which is not the end of the world.

Enough of your cheekiness!

On a good day, I can get up to 15mpg.

That seems pretty economical to me. The family car only does 25mpg.

Re: Train fare increases

I get a Free 5 year railcard with my Natwest Student account, and fully realise I should be grateful I get a third off - and I am... but I find it amusing with 2 price raises now, my student rate price will be the same as full price pre-price raises (if you all get my drift )

But nevertheless Virgin still run the west coast mainline and I am happy about that - some of the other companies who shall remain nameless are shocking! Near flawless operation for my jaunts from Manchester <-> Euston

P.S. This xmas I am travelling 1st class £46 return

Mine are staying the same at £58.90 I think and considering I use the busiest commuter line in the country I don't think that is so bad.

Thumbs down Re: Train fare increases

Hi,

Has anyone else noticed, that the higher the cost of train tickets, the worse the service gets?!

Also, I note that once again, the ticket increase, is for "improving services"! I don't think I've heard that excuse since, ooooh, about 8 months ago, or whenever the last price-rise was inflicted on us!

The key thing to remember is that passenger safety is the number one priority. Except for profits and director's bonuses of course.

Anybody who travels with First Capital Connect (like i do) must like torture.

I copied this direct from the SE trains website:

Sittingbourne. Weekly 2007: £67.60 Weekly 2008: £73.00

Sorry to bring bad news.

But apparently, SE trains are providing more services coming up from Kent due to the increase in people moving to the area.

I find the length of the journey a bore, but If I get the fast train to Cannon St in the morning, it's only 35 minutes.

I find the service better than travelling up from Dartford via Sidcup, like I use to.

Good job your railcard is only 5yrs because by 2012 Virgin may no longer have the West Coast franchise if rumours already circulating are true.

Thanks!

My Gold card is up for renewal in Aug. at present its £2704. My g/f and I both use the same service so thats a combined total of £5408 - at least we get a seat I guess

5% payrise helps somewhat though, its just a shame I need to use that to offset so many annual increases....

you mean re-subsidied... There was once a company called British Rail.
In the 90s Margret Thatcher allowed the privatisation of British Rail.

If you learn about economics, you'll understand why it is "better" or why it should be better...

It is stupid why we in the U.K. have to buy tickets for a generally bad service...

In hong kong, the trains in a month are late by 10 minutes IN TOTAL.
In U.K., the trains are late 10 minutes late basically every train i take !!!

btw i live in b'ham and occasionally travel down south

i read that my line was the busiest... well actually i heard that the train i get on in the morning (sometimes) which leaves Orpington at 8:02 is the busiest train in the country.

I bet they all say it! Still takes the wee that i live 14 miles away (i think thats right?) yet it takes me the best part of 90 mins to get home in the evenings with all the waiting around, and 50 mins on a good day with a fast train. Id drive in if my work wasnt one road inside the CC zone and there was somewhere to park!

Heh. I know when I want to go back home for xmas, and when to come back south (coursework and all that), so can book journeys 2 months in advance and get them super cheap. Pretty happy about <£50 1st class return

btw I will go back to standard class if I find 1st class isn't for me

I don't know. If Virgin ran the other coast like the west coast, why did they lose the franchise? Unless I am blissfully ignorant, I repeat I am more than happy with Virgin Trains

I will get rail cards through to 2010... by which time I hope to
a) Be driving
b) Chauffeured in a car/private plane

I assume you mean the X-Country franchise.By all accounts Virgin put a low bid because they didnt really want to renew(Virgin took on X-Country as part of the deal for West Coast)and was probably expecting(foolishly)to take on the East Coat franchise. The again Arriva put in a bid for X-Country,won the franchise then approached the Government for another £40m because they had 'miscalculated'.

Re: Train fare increases

Mine is going up 4.6% to a whopping £18.10 per month.

Its the second rise we have had in the last 12 months, but the service is getting worse. My journey is under ten minutes - it takes me longer to walk to the station - but the trains are often 10-15 minutes late, don't think we've had one on time this week.

Re: Train fare increases

Hardly ever used the trains.

Overly expensive and crappy online booking (when I last checked several months ago) system which makes finding a cheap ticket about as hard as it was when the cheapo airlines launched several years ago.

That said, I realy fancy a go on the Euro "super fast" Star to Europe at some stage if it don't cost an arm and a leg

Don't complain too loud, since many Companies response to overcrowding is to increase ticket prices, so that the "Riff-Raff" can no longer afford the fares, thus reducing the number of passengers travelling.
