Free upgrades for newlyweds???

Right then, I'd like all your opinions on this please, loads of people have mentioned it but I'm in two minds as to what to do

Me and the missus got married last week and we are off to Mexico for a 2 week honeymoon on Sunday

Is it true that if you mention on check in that you are on your honeymoon you have a good chance of getting upgraded for free? Loads of people have told me this over the past few days and have also told me to say it when checking into the hotel etc (which is a 5 star all inclusive so would there be a difference?)

I would never usually do this but I have been thinking of upgrading our seating on the plane to 5* Premium Plus because lets face it, 10 hours is a lot of time parked on your arse and I like the idea of getting the upgrade for free

Has anyone done this? Is everyone just blagging me so I look stupid on check in?

Cheers

Re: Free upgrades for newlyweds???

It's true but depends on availability.

We flew to San Francisco with United six years ago on ours and got there early like everyone says.

Take your certificate with you....

Were told to board last and we would have to wait and see, we got to the gate and handed our ordinary passes in and were given business class upgrades by the smiley stewardess!!

My one and only time long haul business class and it was wicked, champagne served all the way and available about 4 minutes after take off.

Couldn't believe how much better it is on such a long haul flight, oh how the other half live.

Congratulations by the way hope you enjoy Mexico, we've been twice and the people are lovely. Where are you headed for?

Just go to the check in, tell them you're newlyweds and flash the old certificate if asked. If you get there first at least you're on the list if upgrades are available.

Never been to Riviera Maya, think it is Cancun side. Make sure you got to Chitzen Itza but take loads of water with you as it is so hot and humid. Amazing place and once in a lifetime experience.

Cheers bud, we'll do that!

Did you take the original certificate or a copy by the way?

Re: Free upgrades for newlyweds???

We tried this on flights to new york and were told that most airlines no longer offer this. We asked at both check in and upon boarding with no joy (virgin atlantic). WE also had a copy of the wedding certificate. That said when we got to NY the hotel upgraded us to a suite as it was our honeymoon! Good luck.

Re: Free upgrades for newlyweds???

Don't think you'll get a plane upgrade but you'll probably get a hotel room upgrade.

Re: Free upgrades for newlyweds???

make sure you join their frequent flyer programme, even if you are never going to use them again.

really, this all depends on how full the plane is, but good luck!

Even if you dont get a bunch of free stuff, its your honeymoon, so dont let it get you down, and just chill out and enjoy yourselves.

As for paying the difference, I fly about 150 hours a year, mostly long haul, and always in economy. For the price difference, I feel its a worthwhile saving for a few hours cramped into a seat, and thats not even me spending my own money. If its my cash I am super-mean with flights. After all, if its another £500 each to get into premium economy, thats £1000 you could be spending on a good time when you get to mexico.

Re: Free upgrades for newlyweds???

Tried the same with Excel. Sent an e mail asking any free upgrades to Excel One as we are getting married in Tobago. No joy

They say they have a policy of not giving free upgrades. I suppose we could always ask on check in. Don't hold out much hope though.
