The Lord Mayor's Show

Toffs with glove puppets in horse drawn carriages? What on earth is that all about?

(Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a good parade. It's just the toffs I'm worried about.)

Environmentally friendly, innit? Apart from the horse manure, which isn't.

I thought it would be as organic fertiliser. Or does it need a methane offset scheme to be kosher?

Re: The Lord Mayor's Show

I'm more worried about the bull "manure" in the bbc's commentary...

Re: The Lord Mayor's Show

Erm, showing my ignorance here... I don't watch the news or read papers... Have we got a new Lord Mayor of London? Has Red Ken been replaced by David Lewis?

No, this has nothing to do with Red Ken. The Lord Mayor is the Mayor of the "City" of London, and it is supposed to be a completely apolitical role.

Anyway, each year there is this silly parade thingy in the City, and lots of toffs get dressed up in silly outfits and are dragged around in prams, so that us plebeans can stand by and wave and pay our respects. Exactly what these people have achieved in order to deserve this organised adulation, is in fact, anyone's guess, but these people love their traditions and the feeling of self importance. Anyway, in order to seem in touch with us commoners, and frankly, because watching a bunch of elderly, overweight rich people, who have never lifted a finger in their lives, slowly proceed along a street, is entirely dull, they have started carrying glove puppets, as a rather pathetic form of entertainment for the crowds. Anyway, once these chaps have finally passed by, you then get entertaining processions from worthy causes, who naturally have no need for silly gimmicks in order to receive the respect from the crowd, since most members of the crowd, in any case, are most likely only there because one of their friends or family are taking part in this part of the procession.

And that's the lord mayor's show for you!
