There is a breed from Turkey that likes water and will go into water in hot summers to cool off.

I never mix cats and baths any more for the same reason. A very scary experience for all concerned. They seem to spend most of the day licking themselves anyway, so they can't get that dirty.

The pictures are funny though

Spare a thought for anyone that has a giant hairy cat like mine. I have had to bath her on a few occasions as they are sometimes prone to "hangers on." Actually she seems to understand the reason why I have to do it and will tolerate if not actively enjoy the process.

Please leave my shoulders alone .

Re: Wet cats

Having washed my cat a few times to get rid of fleas that she caught while being looked after elsewhere when we were on holidays I can say she doesn't enjoy it but has given up trying to escape.

She does look miserable and needs constant reassurance, but you can't help laugh at what she looks like.

The thing she hates more than the wash itself is the drying with a towel (even if you don't rub the wrong way etc.).

Why would you wash a cat to get rid of fleas? Just use something like Frontline.

I would have thought that just washing would not eradicate them fully anyway, whilst causing unecessary stress to the cat.

Washing a cat, will not rid it of fleas. Since fleas bury their eggs under the skin, you need a chemical based solution like Frontline.

Actually it does ! That's why you have cat anti flea shampoo.
http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.a...=51&pf_id=0673

I used Frontline and it's always been useless (my parents have like 20 cats and they can confirm that).

The shampoo above has always cleaned the fleas off her (and they don't come back so it must have an effect on the eggs) and while I'm washing her my husband sprays the whole house so any flea that may have jumped off is killed too.
I've also used this http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.a...=51&pf_id=4196
which is amazing - the pest just falls off while washing.

Also the eggs aren't buried under the skin.
Quote:
The female flea lays up to 20 eggs at a time either on the animal or in it's bedding or around the home. The eggs themselves are not sticky and any eggs laid on the animal will soon fall off into the environment.
As for unecessary stress to the cat, it's more stressful for her to be itchy and scratching for hours.
I don't wash her for fun, it's happened 4 times in her 4 years life and I'd do it again to stop her from itching like hell.

Its the other way round for me, ive used that shampoo before and it diddnt do a thing, im using frontline and a flea trap and it does the trick. With the weather not being to hot the fleas seem to clear off. I'm glad though because I get bitten very badly from them.

Re: Wet cats

Krish's How To Wash A Cat link is brilliant and to the music of Thelonious Monk.

Regarding the Gremlins I got my first 2 cats 16 years ago and called them Gizmo and Stripe. Giz is still with us. Bath time is when their smell gets a bit much. It's not to clean them.

All the best

Re: Wet cats

we've always used frontline and its terrific stuff....so long as you remember to top it up every so often....and you have to make sure you get it on to the skin, not just on the fur, if it doesnt hit the skin properly then it wont do any good...

never have we bathed a cat, granted ours are not long hair, but not proper short hair either.......he keeps himself clean and mum brushes him every week or so which helps......we also feed him decently so he always has a nice coat, seldom does he look shabby

used to find it amusing bathing the yorkie we had a few years ago tho, poor little sod...lol....he wasnt too keen on it, but unlike a cat a dog cant clean himself properly....but he looked so pathetic once he was all sudded up....heh

Well I don't use the shampoo for repelling fleas on the long run, it's to get rid of them when they're there already. With the cat grooming herself all the time I doubt the shampoo would have a long lasting effect.

But Frontline has never worked even though I was careful to use it exactly as it should. I don't know why.
My mum had to use the "industrial" stuff that the vet use (not from shops) on her cats as they go out at will and walk through fields and stuff. Frontline was costing a fortune and didn't stop the fleas.

I find a towel works better. That way you don't get fur clogging up the dryer.
