Ben Nevis

Going up Ben Nevis end of the month. Went to Glen Coe and did some hill walks around there earlier this year so will be good to finally go up the Ben. Any advice?

Re: Ben Nevis

Don't walk up the tourist path - as long as you are reasonably confident and competent the route up carn mor dearg arete and up to the top of the ben is much better and avoids the hoards on the main path. It involves some easy scrambling - the link below gives a bit of a description http://www.munromagic.com/RouteInfo.cfm?RouteID=180

Obviously if you'd rather trawl up with the coach parties........

lol. Unfortunately, or fortunately I will be with some less (even less) experienced friends than myself. So we will be seekign safety in numbers. It's one day before the big september race, so I reckon it'll be busy too.

Re: Ben Nevis

In that case just make sure you have boots/waterproofs/map and compass and hopefully you'll get good weather. Navigating about on the summit plateau can be a bit dodgy (particularly in a white out which is somewhat unlikely in september) aside from that it is a very straightforward and particularly unpleasant walk to the top of a beautiful mountain.

See if you can find anyone with a recording of Mountain with Gryff Rhys Jones from Sunday Night on BBC2, he went up the Ben, interesting program.

Re: Ben Nevis

Funky Monkey, If taking are group of inexperienced walkers up the Tourist Track, a good place to start is Achintee, the Ben Nevis Inn is there and is reasonable priced for a pint and food when your're finished, You will need to give yourself around 8 hours for the round trip, I would make it an early start and you can be up and aroung half-way lochan (Lochan Meall an t-suidhe) before the general tourists. The zig-zags will prove tedious but if you stick to the well worn paths you will be ok. Warning - if you get clagged in and need to use the compass on the summit plateau then you need to use the bearing here:

http://www.mountaineering-scotland.o...s_bearing.html

This will stop you from veering into Five Finger Gully which is where the majority of accidents happen.

Lastly enjoy yourself and publish some photos here when you get back, if the weather is bad the the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven is and excellent wet weather alternative: http://www.ice-factor.co.uk/
