Birthday Present for a 30th

OK,

I want some help if I may.
Its my sisters boyfriends 30th soon.
We are very similar which is why its hard to decide what to get him.
He has just got a 360 and loves it but is asking for games, which I understand but you want to get him something special.

However the idea I would go for is just too far out of budget, (Topfield PVR)

So this is the dilema. I want to get something special but don't want to have to sell a kidney to get it.

I am looking for maybe a gadget that wont just sit on a shelf for ever.
Has any one here been given a great gift.
Or knows of a great idea for a gift that I can give?

He is into Cars,
Films (has a nice home Hifi Set up)
Games
Mountain Bikes
and stuff.

xBox steering wheel.

http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/6-/Searc...l)&match_type=

Don't know if that's too pricy. But would make a great addition to any driving games.

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

Have you looked through the "I want one of those" web site?

http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/

Also play.com has a gadget area and thinkgeek is good too.

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

If hes serious into mountain biking then something for that is always appreciated....depends how into it he is though if its just a leisurly thing then maybe not but if serious out all the time rider then maybe a spanky flash helmet probably cost you 80 quid for a really nice one!!

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

Cheers for the ideas guys,

He doesn't smoke so the novelty ashtray wouldn't fit.

The steering wheel is a great idea but again along the game route, but def an option.

See Firebox and I want one of those. Thinking about the RC helicopter etc.

Biking he is very into. He wants a £1000 frame, (suprisingly we all said on you bike)
But not sure what he may need for the bike and as I am not a rider I have no idea what would be useful.
Because of the cars he has loads of tools.

Ohh its a mine field

Aria Technology (aria.co.uk) have helicopters in their super specials are for a tenner - probably about a £5er for postage but you could send that as part of a present?

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

What about a track day or an airfield day? This would depend on your budget (between £100 and £200) and if his car is up to it (or you could hire one at the circuit)? I'd prefer a trackday to a 'driving experience' in a Porsche or Ferrari because you'd get 20x more time in the car.

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

Depends on how much you want to spend, but I'm into gadgets and have allsorts but the best and most used thing I have is a harmony 360 all in one remote, which controls my 360, media centre, TV, VHS, projector, surround sound and air conditioning.

Cost about £80 but from the US only I think, I ordered mine on Amazon and it took a few days to come.

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

As he's into film, might be worth checking out the threads at the DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray Movie Bargains forum: www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=49
- for any good deals on boxsets etc that he might enjoy

However if its your first time at that forum, be warned it may cost you a lot of money over the next few years

Thought about a head video camera for his mountain biking.

Anyone used one, know of a good deal?

That's a good idea. To get a bullet cam to work you need the video camera to accept an AV in, which not all seem to do. A quick google should give you some choices but iirc they are about £80 - £100 for a colour one.

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

How about a Hard Back copy of Logan's Run by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson along with a DVD of the film.

While the actual Novel had the end day at 21, the film used an end day of 30 which is the more common age associated with Logan's Run

Lets face it, Jenny Agutter in the buff is always worth getting for your birthday.

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

I had been thinking of a 360 HD-DVD drive.
A few people have replied to my other post offering them and I thank them however my Fiancee is putting in doubts and here is why:

He has a 360 but at the mo a normal CRT
They are on a tight budget so not sure when they will get LCD.
Suggest (as previous posts) of experience day but kind of wanted a physical gift.

Would the HD-DVD Drive be wasted?
Will it not make enough difference on a SD tele?
Is it worth putting the £80-100 to better use.

I am so confused

Waste of time i would guess. If it's not a HD TV then he won't notice any difference.

By the time he's saved up for a new TV then there are likely to be cheaper players on the market anyway.

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

Well I was 30 just over 2 Months ago Hooray & I wanted stuff that I could keep forever to remember it by so my parents bought me...

20th Anniversary Optimus Prime Figure
2 x Star Wars Clone Wars Ltd Edition Giclee pictures

And Gave me £180 to spend on stuff for myself, so I've bought the Masterpiece Megatron figure & booked myself in for a new Tattoo

All of which are things I will NEVER get rid of & will always be a constant reminder of my 30th year

So I know it sounds sad but maybe do something similair, something that no matter how much older he gets he can look back at the gift & say "I got that for my 30th" everything you've mentioned will over time get changed, thrown out or replaced so maybe get something "special" for him??

Oh & to make my 30th an even more memorable year I'm taking myself off to Washington DC to see the Redskins play at Fedex Field.

I hated the idea of turning 30 but once your there it really is fantastic

Neil

Re: Birthday Present for a 30th

if he's into cars then how about a private number plate.

Mine was quite expensive but they do start from £250 upwards, may be if you but your monies together...

It's makes a great 30th cos it's something you can keep for life (in theory)
