seems a really dumb question but whats the difference between...

water and tonic water?

obviously tonic is sparkling but surely then it would just be sparkling water .

sparkling water is just sparkly water

Tonic water is sparkly water with quinine iirc.

It has Quinine in it, it may have other things as well as the CO2, It was put in there as a precaution against Malaria but it was so bitter that the British Ex Pats put Gin in it while they were out in India, this is why it is sometimes known as Indian Tonic Water.

Clarissa Dickson Wright (formerly the somewhat larger portion of the two fat ladies) tells this story of how her adrenal gland was damaged due to her excessive intake of quinine in the tonic water she consumed with her two-bottle-a-day gin habit when she was an alcoholic. Her liver somehow survived the onslaught!:

Its also got sugar in - thats why you can get slimline tonic water
