Thumbs down Shattering glass - Spooky stuff !!!!!

I was typing away on the computer today and the missus and kids were all downstairs when there was a VERY loud sound of breaking glass from upstairs

The wife had left a half filled Stella tulip glass (with coke in) on the side cabinet by the bed which had decided to explode shattering splinters of glass a good 1m in radius from where the glass was. Just glad we were not in bed, as we'd both have been covered in glass.

TBH this has really freaked us out a bit because although the window was open, there was no reason for the damn thing to break on its own. It looked more like it had either exploded or had been dropped from a height

Has anyone else experience anything weird happening like this without a good reason, or has Stella just got a bad design of new glasses which are prone to explode

Re: Shattering glass - Spooky stuff !!!!!

Had a glass coffee table last year approx 6 - 10 mm thick. Got up one morning last summer to find it shattered into thousands of pieces. Nothing anywhere near it and table was approx 4 years old

The glass was probably already pre-stressed with combatting a 20-39 PC+, and had just realised you have a PC Ultra on order and thought, **** it, why wait?

Re: Shattering glass - Spooky stuff !!!!!

Was the glass in direct sunlight, that would be the only thing i can think of, and that shouldn't even make a difference.

Plus, you shouldn't drink coke before bed, as it'll eat your teeth away.

Re: Shattering glass - Spooky stuff !!!!!

Was the glass on the floor smashed or still on the sideboard?Got no explainations for that but I would put the house up for sale and stay with friends or family till its sold

Friend of mine told me about when he was in bed, early hours of the morning and heard noises coming from his wardrobe. As he looked at it in the darkness the door started to slowly open. Just as his heart was about to pop out of his mouth .......his young son climbed out and said "Alright Dad?". Apparently ,his son never said why, hed been in the wardrobe for hours Scared the out of my mate.

Re: Shattering glass - Spooky stuff !!!!!

Your glass may have suffered from a (rare) problem which has been identified in toughened glass....

Re: Shattering glass - Spooky stuff !!!!!

Glass will have stresses "frozen in" as it cools from the molten state. Microscopic scratches may concentrate this stress to a point where the whole structure fails. Fairly rare in drinking glasses (I think!), but more common in tempered glass. Possibly a small change in temperature was enough to push it over the edge...

If you have other glasses from the same set I'd be a bit wary of them!
