Advice on Sold Item

Hey All,

I sold a definitely working Motherboard on Ebay. Now the guy who bought it is saying it does not work at all. Its been two weeks sin it got delivered and seems a bit long really to suddenly not be working.

He says he is going to mail it back to me and wants a refund ....

It could well be that he broke it? Or it got damaged in the post (even though i packed it very well?)

What do I do? What would you guys do?

Re: Advice on Sold Item

Be careful, if you scan this forum you will be aware that some people have been duped by this..the buyer swaps the motherboard you sent for a broken one (which he had all along), leaving you in a difficult position...and PayPal will side with the buyer.

For the future, if you sell anything, mark it with a UV pen and take a picture if you can....

He paid by PayPal.

Luckily I did mark the motherboard, (I had checked his recently purchased items and there was an identical purchase) still I dont feel protected b y this action.

Identical purchase, sounds very dodge!

Yeah, plus based on the feedback they gave each other and the item which clearly says "could be faulty" I do believe I am having the proverbial fast one pulled on me.

Re: Advice on Sold Item

I'd make him aware that you have marked the item, and that this will be checked on return, if the item is found to be the original and is indeed faulty, but if it's not then the item will not be refunded. Tell him you have photographic evidence of the marking, and will use this as evidence should it come to a claim with paypal.

In the meantime, clean out yer paypal account quick!

I agree, letting him know that you have marked it may dissuade him from his little plan.

Re: Advice on Sold Item

If you tell him it's marked he may look for the mark on your board and copy it to the dud, it might be a good idea not to tell him... Just a thought.

Dave

PS did you record the serial number?

Even if you didn't, you could tell him you did and that additionally if the sticker shows any signs of tampering with you will know that the board is not the one you sent. Then you can keep the fact you marked it as security back up for your own identity check when/if he returns it.

Re: Advice on Sold Item

accurately copying a mark on the board will be VERY difficult, and if you tell him you have photographics evidence of the marking, this will probably disuade him from trying.
Also bear in mind, he doesn't need to know HOW you marked it. It could be that you chipped the edge of the board. Scratched a screw hole... UV pen, there are many ways, and you don't need to tell him how you did it.

Re: Advice on Sold Item

Good point Bilbob, so if he says he has photographic evidence that allows him to clearly identify his board, that may be enough to stop the fraud without giving anything away.

Re: Advice on Sold Item

I did let him know that I discretely marked the board and that I would not refund him if the board is not identical.

I have also taken the advice to clean out my paypal account (though they still have access to my bacnk account so I dont know how much this will help).

Idiot that I am - I marked it, but did not take a photo and did not record the serial numbers. Anyway, if it is not the board I sent I will fight paypal on this as much as I can.

Re: Advice on Sold Item

AFAIK, paypal take money from your account via direct debit, and if this is so, and they DO take it back via this method, then you can go to your bank and tell them to take it back under the terms of the DD guarantee.

Also, if the board was boxed, then usually, the serial number is on the box outer too.

Re: Advice on Sold Item

Well as I said I outlined the actions I would take - I have not got a response yet, so lets see. At least next time I know to not only be clever but to take photographic evidence of me being clever.

Re: Advice on Sold Item

Ah this old chestnut, buy something and swop it, now it's becoming so bad on ebay.

Can you afford a neg? I want to keep my 100% but if someone tries it on I'll happily lose it to show them up!
