Black or Silver - AV Kit?

Ok so there we all are.............

researching, discussing kit, then putting our hard earned money down to buy some great AV we hope!

I would like to get the Toshiba HD e1 pretty soon. Only problem is that it comes in black (which can be good).

Then I think ok get a black reciever to match (any brand). But would this be too much black for the eye?

My living room is quite modern with some classic touches. Main thing is - walls are cream and carpet is brown/beidge. so fairly modern.

My plasma stand where all the gear would sit is glass with a silver finish cnetre part that holds it all thogether.

Now I would like to et everything silver - to match with the plasma (PX60 panasonic) and also owing to the fact everthing wont look to in your face. As black will look hard on soft colours. Silver should blend togther and you will look at the screen more then the kit.

What do you guys think? Black or silver?

Thanks

Re: Black or Silver - AV Kit?

Two of my set ups are black and one is silver. I by far prefer the 'professional' look of the black set ups but accept they don't look good with all decor.
I think in your case I would err for silver.

Re: Black or Silver - AV Kit?

I think Im definatly steering more toward silver.................

It basically blends into the back round more - but still looks the part.

If yo have dark furniture then you can easily get away with black.

Re: Black or Silver - AV Kit?

I much prefer black, I find silver a bit cheap looking (no offence to anyone with silver kit!)

Re: Black or Silver - AV Kit?

Depends on the finish more than the colour for me. A decent piano black gloss looks the business but the black on a £60 Alba mini system looks rubbish, same for silver.

Most of my kit is silver with the exception of my Wii (white) and my Sky HD (black) box, but its all different finishes and shades so none of it matches. My Xbox 360 is chrome, my Arcam amp is aluminium, my Denon dvd player is "titanium".

In your case I'd go for silver and try to buy everything from the same manufacturer or at least see it all together to see how close a match it is.

Re: Black or Silver - AV Kit?

Black. It will never go in or out of fashion like all the silver/gold/champagne/platinum/etc etc fads
Its a classic hi-fi/home cinema pre requisite and i'm sure when all the others have faded away it will live long and proud.
Black kit is class and thats permanant, others mentioned are the current form but that as we all know is temporay.

interesting you say that.

This is my opinion. Both Black and silver dont go out of fashion. i think its more to do with the detail that goes onto the kit. For example most new kit that is black comes with white writing. This IMO gives the kit a freah look where a few years back majority of black kit was with gold writing.............

just some thoughts.....

Champagne definatly looks out dated. Platinum can also specially the old marantz gear.

As the woman who has to do the dusting black is my arch enemy and I'd choose silver no matter what for my house.

This is of course the downside, I have to dust my kit every couple of days it seems. Also scratched show up more (not that I have any )

Black, Black and Black.

Unless you are going for a arcam set up they do silver and black and one of the few that look good in silver.

Re: Black or Silver - AV Kit?

Black. I couldn't believe it when silver (or brushed ali as it really is) came back in. It looks sooooooo cheap and nasty. Even high end amps still look tacky in ali.
