Repel boarders (or keeping out a bothersome cat)

Maisy (a cat by the way) is 11 years old and not quite so able to defend her manor. The back garden here is very small and she seldom goes beyond that. Occasionally she'll get up on to the flat roof of the neighbour extension and scrape off the lichen, but that's about the extent of her domain.

Now, there's a local Tom cat who's currently on the prowl. He's a big black and white bugger and goes by the name of Don Piano (it's a long story. Please refer to You Tube for further details.)

He bothers Maisy and on the last couple of times, I have to intervene to break up the resulting feline fisticuffs.

I've started throwing pints of water at him whenever he's about as a deterrent and to ingrain some sort of Pavlovian response in him to desist from trespassing. However, he's becoming bolder and appears to be hell bent on mixing it with the big boys.

I've even fought fire with fire, and anointed the territory with my own urine. However, all this has succeeded in doing is to have frightened the neighbours. Don Piano still continues to try and stare me out.

So I need to up the ante. Any suggestions? Please bear in mind that I need to drive this insurgent moggy out, but still make the garden viable for Maisy to use.

You could just be happy that Maisy still has what it takes to pull herself a younger fella?

Take Don Piano down the vets for a snip, snip. That will stop him forcing his attentions on your Maisy.

Re: Repel boarders (or keeping out a bothersome cat)

Well there are a myriad of suggestions here.

Okay, can't use an air rifle, that's just mean.
Spikes would impeded Maisy's access around the garden etc. as would orange peel.
Maisy doesn't like Don Piano's attention. It often ends in fisticuffs.
Don Piano ain't my moggy so can't get him neutered (infact he might be feral).

I think the super soaker plus a little extra, is the best approach.

Damn that feline Cassanova

Anyone else think that DP qualifies as a cat that looks like Hitler.

Paint a white line down the back of your cat, making her look like a skunk.

Turn the tables. Feed rohypnol to Don Piano and let Maisy go to town on him.

Re: Repel boarders (or keeping out a bothersome cat)

It is currently raining here in Rochester. I've just found a Grapefruit ans was in the process of peeling it when who should turn up in the back yard?

Not only does the rain not bother Don Piano, but it would appear that neither does citrus fruit. I chucked the half peeled item at him and he just stood there giving it Charlie Potato and Harry large.

I might have to call in a friend of mine who's a falconer. Give him the Kirk Douglas treatment in the Vikings

Re: Repel boarders (or keeping out a bothersome cat)

Confused what does Charlie Potato and Harry Large rhyme with.

Did you mimic an explosion noise when the fruit landed? Observing the fruit-throwing human methinks Don Piano is growing in confidence. . .

Charlie Potato = To swagger and pose in a cliched alpha male fashion. To give the impression to ones social peers that one is "hard as nails".

Similar to acting like Jack the Peanut.

Please let me know if you have a regional equivalent.

If the cat is feral, all the more reason to get it neutered. The vet is not going to ask you to prove it's your cat!

Re: Repel boarders (or keeping out a bothersome cat)

Rather than throwing your fruit basket and toys from amazon at the intruder try going out with Maisey when Dp is in the vicinity. Cats are terratorial by nature, and throwing stuff at them when they are just doing whats natural is just cruel. My old neighbour used to sit on the back door step with a pea shooter until I went round and threatened to shove it up his a**e. One of my cats was kicked so hard in the head it broke her jaw clean in half, 2 teeth knocked out and 1 pushed through the top of her mouth. This, I can only imagine, was due to her venturing into someones garden.

When my cat's were up north with me they were always quite scared of the amount of other cats venturing into our garden. But we always used to walk out with them and sit there so they knew we were there; eventually giving them the confidence to fight back. Which in turn let the cats know they would have a fight on their hands if they dared. It's just natural.

Re: Repel boarders (or keeping out a bothersome cat)

I do not advocate animal cruelty in anyway Dazza and would not Kick Don Piano. I also won't (despite what I said) set Nigel the Pergrine Falcon on him.

I can't always walk the beat with Maisy. She's got to try and get by on her own but being 11, she's no longer a black belt in all forms of feline ninjitsu.

I think the super soaker approach is the best.

If Mr Piano gets repeatedly splashed or at least knows there's the risk of it, he may alter his rounds to no longer include this part of the hood.

We have a safari park local and people use the lion poo, and I have seen it for sale in pets shops not local as a deterant for cats. So might be worth a look in the local pet shops to you.

Re: Repel boarders (or keeping out a bothersome cat)

I have heard that if you pee around the borders of your garden that this stops cats and foxes coming in.

obviously, do it when its dark. No waving your willy at the neighbours. ahem. Or perhaps you could use a container.
