Rome - most romantic place to propose?
I'm gonna pop the question to my girlfriend next week while in Rome.
Does anyone know the most romatic place to do it.
AND do i need a ring or should i let her choose when we come back?
I'm a newbie when it comes to proposing

Spooky, this was posted a year ago today:

Me, I'd pick the Trevi fountain.

Or the Forum, which doesn't seem to get quite so clogged with tourists.
Basically, Rome is just one big chunk of romance, so you won't go far wrong at any of the main spots.
As for a ring, my advice is to buy a cheapie joke ring from Accessorize or similar, then go ring shopping on your return to the UK - your girl won't want to miss out on the fun of diamond shopping!! A nice alternative one of my friends did was to buy a loose diamond (which the jeweller put in a cheap silver setting so she could wear it straight away) then choose a setting together. It has the advantage that she won't know how much you spent.
One last thing - do your research big time before going ring shopping, whether alone or with your intended. And visit a whole bunch of jewellers to get a feel for what you can get for your money.
And, last of all - good luck and congratulations!!

Consider the Piazza Navona. The Trevi Fountain is vey crowded. Go there though and toss a coin in; it guarantees you'll go back.

Re: Rome - most romantic place to propose?
I'm not sure when/if they turn the lights off at the Trevi fountain but I went there just before midnight at the end of one summer and it wasn't too busy (or so I recall). This was several years ago so it could have got worse.

And what is wrong with a night at the Catford dogs and then a slap up meal at Spud-u-like? Oozes sophistication.

Re: Rome - most romantic place to propose?
I went to a restaurant last week and one of the customers asked for a glass of champagne in which he put the ring to propose.
It is a cliche but she looked well impressed nonetheless.
A nice restaurant in Rome and a glass of champagne?

 Not the AVForum GC
Just remeber, it's the person who's doing the asking thats really important, rather than the setting.

Re: Rome - most romantic place to propose?
The Trevi fountain is almost always crowded at this time of year; and when it isn't crowded it's switched off. (We went early one morning the other month, and the Rome Council workers were cleaning it - far from romantic!) Piazza Navona might be a better choice, though currently the main, central fountain is under hoarding. If you do pop the question there, get her a Tartufo icecream from the Tre Scalini caffé first - she'll love you for ever! Personally, however, I would suggest the beautiful Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, in the historic Trastevere quarter, across the river.

Re: Rome - most romantic place to propose?
Depends on your point of view. It's certainly an awe-inspiring structure, and (to my eyes) a beautiful building, but maybe your fiancée-to-be will be put off by the horrendous traffic on the roundabout on which the Colosseum sits, or the thought of all the misery and violence that occurred there all those centuries ago! It is beautifully lit at night, but IMHO not the most romantic place in the most romantic city in the world.
