Your thoughts on this job advert

I've just seen this job advert

https://www.d2btrade.com/hrvacancies...asp?job=332092

It's in West London, end of the Central Tube Line.

An average 2 bed flat in this area is approx £210,000

"Skills/Test
You must have 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including 2 'A' levels at Grade E or above or NVQ Management Level 3 or 4, or a minimum 1 years experience in the IT Specialism.

In addition, you must be a qualified Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) in MS Windows 2003.

Working knowledge: VAX VMS Systems; Windows NT4, 2000, XP Pro; Red Hat Linux; HTML Editing; MS Office Applications; Adobe PageMaker, Photoshop and Acrobat; SFIA WBSP Website Specialism Level 5; COPL Continuity Management Level 5; ARCH Systems architecture level 5; HSIN Systems Installation Level 4; SCAD Security Administration Level 4; NTAS Network Support Level 3; USUP Service Desk Incident Mgt Level 4; QUAS Quality Assurance Level 5."

"Salary and Allowances
The post is permanent with a starting salary of £18,385, rising to a maximum of £26,626 per annum. In addition there is a Northolt Recruitment and Retention Allowance of £1,800, plus an Outer London Recruitment and Retention Allowance of £1,200 per annum."

1. Do they really expect anyone to apply for this?

2. What would you expect to be paid for this position?

3. What on earth are VAX VMS, SFIA WBSP, COPL, ARCH, HSIN, SCAD, NTAS, USUP?

Cheers

Re: Your thoughts on this job advert

Right, for the senior applicants with all the right skills and experience, you'd possibly be on a maximum salary of £29.5K a year.

This is a government job and they never pay as well as the private sector.

You have to have security clearance to apply as it's an MOD job. They'd definitely want you to have experience of the skill set stated or better still specific qualifications in these disciplines.

This is standard procedure for these types of jobs.

An equivalent in the private sector may earn you up to 7-10K more.

I have some of the skills required myself, but not in all the methodologies. I wouldn't therefore apply.

However, my CV would appear incomprehensible to many outside of the IT industry, as do some of the jobs I apply for.

Horses for courses, I guess.

Basically, it's a job for an aspiring IT professional and not some position that's going to be filled by Joe public.

Re: Your thoughts on this job advert

Like most job ads, they ask more than they will actually get, almost all posts filled will be a compromise because people with a huge range of skills don't exist or are working for more elsewhere.

Re: Your thoughts on this job advert

i earn more than that out in the sticks, and i have none of them qualifications, why someone would spend most of their young life getting all those qualifications to work for that wage in that area is beyond me, personally id add a cisco qualification to my belt and earn 10x more than the top wage they are offering

Re: Your thoughts on this job advert

I have been applying for jobs recently in the south east and its really quite shocking the helpdesk roles are all very similar admittedly some specialising more in other areas. the range of salaries on offer are a joke one or two companies want bi lingual help desk analysts and want to pay you around 15k expecting you to work shifts. Other positions including glorified call loggers are starting at 25k its all a bit bizarre to me. I can only think that there is no shortage in employees so some employers are taking the **** a bit.

VAX VMS is the operating system that the old DEC (Digital Equipment Corp.) servers used to use.
