The best excuse for speeding

Just come back off my hols,so I've got a smile on my face. This will hopefully put a smile on yours too

A senior citizen drove his brand new BMW Z3 convertible out of the car salesroom. Taking off down the motorway, he floored it to 90mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left.

"Amazing!" he thought as he flew down the M40, enjoying pushing the pedal to the metal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a police car behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blaring.

"I can get away from him - no problem!" thought the elderly nutcase as he floored it to 110mph, then 120, then 130mph. Suddenly, he thought, "What on earth am I doing? I'm too old for this nonsense!" So he pulled over to the side of the road and waited for the police car to catch up with him.

Pulling in behind him, the police officer walked up to the driver's side of the BMW, looked at his watch and said, "Sir, my shift ends in 10 minutes. Today is Friday and I'm taking off for the weekend. If you can give me a reason why you were speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go.".........

The man looked very seriously at the policeman, and replied, "Years ago, my wife ran off with a policeman. I thought you were bringing her back."

"Have a good day, Sir," said the policeman

Re: The best excuse for speeding

Reminded me of a news story the other day where there's pressure to put speed limits on the unrestricted parts of the German autobarns, all in the name of saving the planet by reducing car emmissions. A woman who I think was from the German equivalent of the AA said it wasn't a good idea to implement restrictions as driving at only 70 or 80mph is boring and causes people to get distracted, so it's actually safer to drive faster where more concentration is needed. Sounds reasonable to me but couldn't believe she said it, if only we could use that as an excuse to speed over here!

Speeding is good for reducing conjestion....

Becuase you are going faster, you get to where you are going quicker hence spend less time on the road in everyone elses way.

I like driving on the autobahns in Germany. You can drive as fast as your car, experience and the conditions allow, without constantly looking at the speedo and watching out for cameras. You spend all your time looking at the road and the traffic ahead instead.

Although I didn't watch my speedo, I found myself doing around 90mph almost all the time, instead of trying to floor it at 120+ everywhere. Makes for very relaxing travelling.

Re: The best excuse for speeding

There are actually not that many unrestricted sections of the autobahn anymore, and what bits there are tend to be choked with trucks from Eastern Europe And there are considerable fines for speeding, often on-the-spot

But when you do find a good bit, it is wonderful to be able to use the full performance of your car without constantly worrying about Herr Plod

Also, driving 200kph for 30 minutes generates just as much CO2 as driving at 100kph for an hour. Doesn't it?!

Nope. Uses more fuel for higher speeds - and it doesnt go proportionally. But on the other hand, they journey time should be shorter which may result in total co2 emission being lower. But it would all depend on the car, the speeds involved and the driving technique.

What driving technique do you need to keep your foot constant and no gear changing needed?

If you mean speed constant, then cruise control ...

But every car and engine must have its own ideal speed for maximum fuel efficiency.

But cruise control cant work in most real life situation - definitely not on most UK roads.

Re: The best excuse for speeding

After they built the new road, and before they put the speed cameras everywhere, the drive from Abu Dhabi to Dubai was a dream.

Would have been about 1998, I guess. Best part of 100 miles straight, a four lane each way newly surfaced, pretty empty road.

I used to set cruise control at 200 km/h (125 mph) and do the trip in well under an hour

Believe me, you concentrate pretty hard at those speeds.

Having said that, many's the time when I would be overtaken by an arab in a Merc 600s with his feet on the dashboard

Re: The best excuse for speeding

Back to the gag................

Another I heard was about a traffic cop who'd been out all shift with his radar looking for "speeders".

Toward the end of his shift, a young man came tearing round the corner in his hot hatch well over the speed limit. The cop pulls him over, leans into the drivers window with a wicked smile on his face and gloats to the young driver "I've been waiting for you all day".

Quick as a flash the yound man replies "Well I got here as quick as I could!"

Allegedly he was let off with a warning!
